1993 Toyota MR2 GT T-Bar

Highlights

 • Low mileage
 • Original example
 • Superb condition
 • Desirable GT model

The Appeal

With big shoes to fill due to its predecessor’s success, the second-generation Toyota MR2 entered the market in 1989, with radical updates over the W10. The W20 generation of the mid-engined roadster featured improved engines, more refined suspension, an interior overhaul, and perhaps most notably, new styling.
Today, this generation of MR2 is finally beginning to receive the same admiration as other Japanese legends from the same era, garnering huge interest across the globe. Known for providing a fantastic driving experience, and with styling that truly stands out from the crowd, enthusiasts and collectors alike are on the search for tidy examples, such as this very car.

If you’re in the market for one of the greatest rear-wheel-drive vehicles ever produced, look no further than this stunning, low mileage example.

The History and Paperwork

 • Just 57K on the clock
 • A mere 3 former keepers
 • Original Toyota handbooks
 • Stamped Toyota service documents
 • V5C present
As you’re likely to be familiar with, popular roadsters tend to be quite a seasonal vehicle, and are often known for passing through a fair number of owners over the years. This MR2 however, has just 3 former keepers noted on the V5 document, which is rather remarkable given the age and nature of the car. It’s also covered just 57,636 miles during its 29 years of existence, making it the perfect candidate for a collection, or possible future investment.
As the service booklet and documents will reflect, the vehicle has clearly been well cared for over the years, with plenty of service stamps from main dealers. The paperwork also consists of a small number of previous MOTs, including one from the year 2000, which helps validate the vehicle’s low mileage, showing just 52,058 miles. Also included are the original Toyota handbooks, and the V5C document ready to sign over to the lucky new owner.

The Interior

 • Black leather interior
 • Excellent condition
 • T-Bar roof
 • 3-spoke leather steering wheel
The interior of this Toyota MR2 GT is in excellent condition, especially considering the vehicle’s age. The driver’s seat only shows exceptionally minor signs of wear and age, and the passenger’s seat appears to have hardly been used. Behind both seats, you’ll find the original storage bags for the T-Bar roof panels, along with clean black carpeting.
The steering wheel is in fantastic condition, as are the dashboard, trim pieces, and controls. The only contact point within the vehicle that appears to show signs of use is the leather gearknob, which certainly doesn’t detract from the driving experience.
Being a mid-engined vehicle, you’re treated to both a boot and a frunk. The frunk of course contains the spare wheel, front strut tops, brake fluid reservoir, and a fuse box. In the boot, you’ll find both the original Toyota jack and tool kit. It should go without saying that the interior of this MR2 is believed to be wholly original, containing everything it left the factory with.
Being a T-Bar model, passengers have the option to remove two roof panels, store them in the allocated bags behind the seat, and enjoy the sunshine. If you’re not looking for a tan, both panels fit securely and ensure a watertight roof with a near-pristine headliner.

The Exterior

 • Super White paintwork
 • Excellent original condition
 • Original 5-spoke wheels
 • T-Bar roof
 • Pop-up headlights
Often referred to as a “baby Ferrari” due to styling cues perhaps influenced by the likes of the Ferrari 348, these MR2s boast curvier styling than the first-gen roadster, with a much sleeker stance.
This particular example is in superb original condition, perhaps a testament to previous garage storage and previous care. The white paintwork looks excellent, showing very few minor signs of the usual age-related marks. The only notable defects on the exterior of this superb MR2 are a mark on the rear arch’s plastic trim and hazing in the corners of the windscreen.
As the car is believed to be 100% original, it should come as no surprise that it sits on the very same 5-spoke alloys Toyota intended for it. Being the original wheels, there are of course cosmetic age-related marks. That being said, a refurbishment would bring them right back to their former 1993 glory for not too much money at all.
Over the years, it seems that the styling of this generation of MR2 has aged like fine wine, and now these vehicles are highly sought after for their iconic 90’s Japanese styling.
And perhaps the best part? Pop-up headlights.

The Mechanics

 • 2.0L 16-valve inline-four
 • 5-speed manual gearbox
 • Rear-wheel drive
 • Performs without fault
 • Excellent mechanical condition
Toyota’s flagship roadster is renowned for providing quite an engaging driving experience, with plenty of rear-wheel-drive action and mid-engine handling quirks. Nowadays, these are characteristics seldom found with modern vehicles, making these true “driver’s cars”, highly desirable.

This MR2 fires up right away and does Toyota proud. With no known mechanical or electrical faults, the car drives brilliantly and happily revs throughout each gear. Brakes and suspension perform as intended, as do all electrical components within the vehicle.
Despite covering very few miles for its age, the roadster has been well maintained over the years and has plenty of service stamps to support it. The current keeper wished to ensure the car remained original in all aspects and recently had the original Toyota radiator re-cored by a local specialist.
Now, the car begs to be driven and enjoyed out on the open road, where it will no doubt put a mad grin across your face.

Summary

This Toyota MR2 is a superb example of the 90’s roadster we all love. It’s a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive driver’s car with pop-up headlights, what’s not to love?

The car presents itself beautifully, with the original finish having been preserved fantastically over the years, both inside and out. This MR2 also performs without fault, and will no doubt continue to showcase legendary Japanese performance and reliability for years to come.

If you’re looking for a low-mileage original example of the desirable MR2 roadster for your next weekend toy or collection addition, this is the car for you.
