The Appeal
The 964 era Porsche 911 has always been something of a staple in the model's lengthy and prestigious history. Boasting incredible developments in terms of engineering and safety, the 964 is argued to be the most complete and advanced air cooled 911 ever made, something which is shown by the incredible demand and collectibility these cars have attained in recent years. In the 80s and 90s the 964 was the car to be seen in and flash forward a few decades and we find ourselves in much the same boat. If you want a stylish slice of classic Porsche, the 964 has to be a serious consideration.
L358 AVL is no ordinary 964 though, and comes with an air of exclusivity and rarity enough to widen the eyes of even the most astute Porsche enthusiast. What we have here is one of 1532 WTL (Works Turbo Look) Carrera 2 Cabriolets ever made, a prestige model developed in the final years of the 964 era of 911 which paired that impeccable widebody exterior styling with the revered naturally aspirated flat six engine and rear wheel drive layout that buyers at the time and of present day crave.

The Interior
- Striking red interior colour scheme
- Nicely presented in highly original order
- LHD cabin layout
If the special order factory paintwork wasn’t enough to set this car off from an aesthetic perspective then the interior certainly will, as opening the doors one is presented with a wonderfully vibrant red leather interior, still in highly original order. Undoubtedly a special place to be, it’s a cabin that has been rather well preserved and is a fine demonstration of Porsche design perfection in the 1990s.
A quality deep red leather consumes much of the surface within here, including the front and rear seats and well upholstered door panels. Factory electric seating is in good presentable standing and holds a charming, well earned light patina in places, whilst lacking in more excessive signs of rips or tarnishing, whilst the aforementioned door panels look to be in great form, with matching red carpet lower sections and excellent door furniture.
Impressively for a cabriolet of this age, the colour matched red leather dash panel looks to have avoided the more common signs of sun damage and cracking and instead presents in strong form in both the upper and lower sections, still rich in colour throughout. The contrasting black central insert is of a similarly high quality and proudly plays house to a smart selection of smart switchgear and a lovely analogue instrument cluster. The switchgear itself, which includes climate controls and the Pioneer CD player all present very well with clear quality graphics and very minimal signs of wear and usage.
Plush red carpeting is the order of the day when it comes to the cabin floor, keeping up the vibrant appearances in here, it looks to be in clean well preserved form throughout and drapes its way upwards onto the transmission tunnel and around the fascia for the electronic spoiler controls. A set of protective black Porsche floor mats find themselves in the driver and passenger footwell.
Unlatching the front panel on the car we find a neat and clean carpeted storage area which currently houses the black vinyl tonneau cover.
The Exterior
- Special order Porsche colour scheme
- Cabriolet top
- WTL widebody design
- Folding electric spoiler
Widely regarded as one of the all time great 911 designs, the 964 era cars are very much high rankers in the aesthetics department, and none so more than the Works Turbo Look cars which provide the 964 with a far more aggressive stance and incredible road presence.
Striking by its very nature, this particular 964 is further benefited by the fact it boasts a factory special order Porsche colour. L83E Raspberry Red Metallic was the colour of choice and is a perfect compliment to the car's curved, flowing wider body lines that turns heads and garners admiring looks just about wherever it goes. The paintwork itself is of a great standard throughout, presenting with an alluring pinkish red hue, there are some slight areas of marking commensurate with age to be seen in places, including some light stone chipping around the front of the car however this is an impressively well preserved car from an aesthetic perspective that has worn its miles well.
External trim, badging and mouldings are all exhibited to a similarly high standard and look clean throughout, and at ground level we find four excellent 17” five spoke silver Porsche alloys.
With this being the cabriolet variant of the 964, a contrasting black soft top roof resides atop the Raspberry paintwork. The roof itself presents in good clean order and whilst it couldn’t be opened at the time the photoshoot was undertaken, the vendor informs us that this is in the process of being rectified by a Porsche specialist.
The Mechanics
- Naturally aspirated flat six engine
- Rare tiptronic car
- In great mechanical order throughout
- Desirable rear wheel drive layout
The perfect driving 964? Quite possibly. The C2 WTL Cabriolet combines all the best bits of the turbo design with the highly revered rear wheel drive naturally aspirated driveline. The flat six found in the rear of the car is seen amongst enthusiasts to be one of the best Porsche engines of all time and can get the 964 moving with impressive pace.
Helping get the power down in this particular example is a tiptronic transmission system. Whilst commonplace now, this would have been an incredibly rare sight at the time, with just 433 WTLs equipped with the box from the factory. Both the engine and transmission in this particular car are in great standing having been well cared for and regularly serviced throughout the car’s lifetime. The vendor does tell us that prior to sale and collection, a full UK Porsche specialist service will be undertaken on the car.
On the road the 964 provides an excellent driving experience, firing into life quickly and comfortably. Power delivery is excellent and the entire dynamic feel of the car is arguably unrivalled.
