1993 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon 300 GDS

Highlights

  • Professionally resprayed in 2019
  • Equipped with the desirable six-cylinder diesel engine
  • Very well presented both mechanically and cosmetically

The Appeal

Launched in 1979, the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is still in production today and, 44 years on, it still bears a strong resemblance to its most distant ancestors.
Here we have a very well presented 1993 example, equipped with the desirable 3.0-litre diesel engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. Besides routine maintenance carried out by the vendor since they acquired it in 2014, the car was professionally resprayed in 2019 and received a pair of shock absorbers in 2021.
If you’re drawn to the G-Wagon’s immense off-road capability, or else admire it for its striking design, don’t miss out on this smart example.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the vendor in 2014
  • MOT valid until January 2024
  • V5C present
  • Five former keepers
  • We’re informed that the odometer stopped working around ten years ago
  • The vendor estimates the current mileage to be in the region of 150,000
  • Regular oil and filter servicing carried out by the vendor
  • Offered for sale as the vendor is downsizing their collection
  • We’re informed that it has been garaged since 2014
  • Various invoices for recent servicing and parts
  • We’re informed an invoice for the respray is present amounting to around £2,700

The Interior

  • A very comfortable cabin
  • Cloth seats in very good order
  • Zebrano veneers in good condition
  • Electric windows all in working order
G-Wagons of this era have fabulous interiors, striking the perfect balance between comfort and functionality. With cosseting seats and Zebrano veneers aplenty, this Mercedes-Benz’s cabin has a very premium feel, but at the same time, it’s very hard wearing.
We’re informed that there are no tears in any of the seats and we note there is little wear to report also besides the patina you’d expect from a car of this age and mileage.
The dashboard remains very smart too. We always love heavily figured Zebrano and we’re glad to report all the veneer in the cabin looks to be in good order. The switchgear too reportedly works as it should and seems to display little in the way of wear. The instrumentation works with the exception of the odometer as we mentioned before.
The headlining is in really nice shape and the same can be said of the carpets. There are a few marks on the lip of the boot from loading but inside, it’s in very fair shape for its age.
This is a smart interior for a car of this age which is testament to Mercedes-Benz build quality and the care taken by this G-Wagon’s owners.

The Exterior

  • Garnet Red Metallic paintwork
  • Resprayed professionally in 2019
  • Few blemishes or signs of corrosion
  • Electric mirrors in perfect working order
The vendor informs us that this car was professionally resprayed in 2019 and it continues to present very well. There are a few small blemishes here and there including some very minor bubbling on the rear corner under the window seal. We couldn’t see any damage to the bodywork and the doors continue to fit well.
Underneath, the chassis is in really nice shape and we’re informed that it has been pressure washed and undersealed recently. Some minor welding has been carried out for previous MOT tests but we’re informed that it is now really sound.

The Mechanics

  • 3.0-litre straight-six diesel
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Running and driving well with no faults to report
  • Superb off roading capabilities thanks to triple diffs-locks and high / low gearbox all in working condition
Equipped with Mercedes-Benz’s six-cylinder diesel engine, this G-Wagon performs well and the vendor notes vastly improved performance over five-cylinder variants they have owned previously.
We’re informed that regular oil and filter changes have been carried out by the vendor and we also note some invoices for new glow plugs amongst other service items. The vendor reports that it always starts without hesitation and runs really nicely. The gearbox selects gears smoothly and the car comes to a stop in a controlled fashion.

Summary

These are incredibly capable vehicles and this looks to be a really fine example. If, like us, you’ve always fancied a G-Wagon, don’t miss out on this opportunity.
