The Background

The 600SEL belongs to Mercedes’ W140 series of S-Class saloon & coupe vehicles. The W140 has a rather interesting past, as it was the result of somewhat of a race between BMW and Mercedes. BMW shocked the world in 1986 by releasing their E32 7-Series, which was fitted with a whopping V12 engine, the first to be offered to the public by a German manufacturer post-war.
Upon witnessing BMW’s new release, Mercedes decided to delay the launch of the W140 to give them more time to develop their own V12 platform, in hopes of competing with BMW’s offerings. After taking the time to re-arrange the engine bay of their design and upgrading the brake system, Mercedes finally introduced the V12 W140 in 1991, after nearly a decade of development.
The 600SEL is one of the finest W140 vehicles ever introduced and is packed full of luxury comforts and features. In addition to being one of the comfiest and most luxurious cars to find yourself in, the 600SEL’s mighty V12 produces around 400 bhp and is capable of an impressive sub 7 seconds 0-60 time.

The History

This luxury Mercedes 600SEL was initially supplied by Brooke’s Mercedes, London, and would later serve as a vehicle for the Qatar Embassy. Expectedly, the vehicle’s interior has been very well preserved to provide unrivaled levels of comfort for passengers and looks fantastic.
Over the years, the vehicle has been regularly serviced and maintained as required. The vehicle has also been stored in a dry environment by the current keeper, meaning the vehicle hasn’t been subjected to the wet British weather over the years. The car is now ready to go to a new home, and has a valid MOT until November, ensuring months of stress-free worrying.

The Paperwork

The car comes with an assortment of paperwork, including the original leather folder and original Mercedes booklets (excluding the original service booklet). The paperwork also includes a collection of previous MOT certificates, along with invoices for work carried out. Key pieces of history include receipts for suspension work, wiring harness work, steering, and more.
Although the folder doesn’t include the original Mercedes service booklet, accurate descriptions are included of the vehicle’s service history since new. In addition to this, the vehicle also comes with a new genuine key and the V5C document ready for the new owner.

The Interior

The interior of this 600SEL is in excellent condition and shows minimal signs of wear & tear. The driver’s seat has clearly been used, but doesn’t suffer from major bolster wear and certainly won’t detract from the driving experience. All passenger seats are also in excellent condition, showing even fewer signs of being used.
All 4 door cards and associated controls are in excellent condition for the vehicle’s age. All dial faces and controls have also been well cared for, with very few signs of wear on key items such as indicators and radio controls.
As this used to be a vehicle for the Qatar embassy, it comes as no surprise that there has been extra attention paid to passenger comfort. This vehicle is highly specced with rare picnic tables in the rear and equally rare lambswool mats throughout the car. In addition to these optional extras, the 600SEL comes with plenty of goodies, such as soft-closing doors, an electric sunroof, and self-leveling rear suspension.
Overall, the interior of this Mercedes is a very pleasant place to be and has been very well cared for. It is clean, tidy, and is absolutely jam-packed with comforts and luxury extras.

The Exterior

As the images will reflect, this vehicle is in fair condition but does require a bit of love. The most major item to note, is the damage to the front right sill, just behind the wheel, and some nearby scuffs. Other than the noted area and some marks around the body that a machine polish would undoubtedly ease, it looks mightily impressive.
Most exterior trim pieces and details are in great condition for the age of the vehicle and will certainly look at home when the body is restored to its full glory. All glass and mirrors are also in great condition, with few noticeable marks or scratches typically seen on vehicles of this age.
All 4 wheels, whilst exceptionally stylish are beginning to show signs of age, with areas of bubbling paintwork and minor marks around the rim. Given the specification and rarity of the vehicle itself, these are quite minor details that are easily rectifiable if desired.

The Mechanics

Buyers will be pleased to know that this fine example of German engineering is in full working order, with no known mechanical or electrical issues to report. The mighty V12 fires up straight away and puts the power down in a smooth yet impressive manner throughout the gears. With around 400 bhp, this luxury saloon has more than enough power to cruise along.
As mentioned above, this vehicle will come with paperwork detailing work previously carried out, which includes suspension components, engine wiring harness work, steering repairs, and various maintenance, totaling thousands of pounds. With reasonably low mileage shown on the clocks and extensive maintenance history, this vehicle needs nothing to be enjoyed on the roads once more.

The Appeal

If you’re in the market for one of the most luxurious and prestigious German saloons of all time, this impressive 600SEL should be at the top of your list. It is packed full of rare extras, is as comfortable as riding a cloud, and has performance figures to rival that of modern sports cars.

This vehicle is in full working order and will no doubt fill its new owner with pride.
