The Appeal
This is a nice honest and original Mercedes-Benz 300-24 SL (R129) in a nice colour combination of metallic sterling silver with grey, and a navy soft top.
It’s also a rare early R129 close to 30 years old yet has only covered 87,532 miles, covering only around 10,000 miles over the last 10 years.
If you’re looking for that timeless and very stylish classic car that you can use all round, with its convertible hood and hard top options and that great sounding 3.0 litre 24-valve engine then this could certainly fit that ambition.

There were two previous owners. The car was originally bought in Jersey and sold to the second owner in 1997 in Kensington, London, who kept it for 21 years until 2018, when the current owner bought the car. There are some extra registered keepers on the V5c due to husband/ wife transfers, which there is the documentation for. After 5 years of very enjoyable motoring and ownership it’s now available for its next owner to drive and enjoy.
The Interior
- Good original condition
- Navy leather upholstery
- Climate control and electric roof
- Electric windows and memory seats
- 6-CD auto-changer
The comfortable blue interior is in pretty good shape for the age of this car and it has a nice and worn-in look and, other than some repair work required to address the driver’s seat bolster there’s little to do here but enjoy the ride.
Carpets, headlining and door cards are all nice and original showing the odd mark from use over the years and the wood trim is all still nice and complete and in good shape. All the electrics and instruments are all functioning correctly, with only an intermittent fault with the central locking.
The Exterior
- Finished in Metallic Sterling Silver and Grey
- Rare navy hood and original hard-top
- Original alloy wheels
It’s a very nicely presented SL looking very stylish and potent with its two-tone metallic paintwork and contrasting navy blue hood. The wheels are correct with good tyres, two of which are fairly recent, but the rims are fairly well scratched round the rim edge from those London kerbs.
The paintwork is good too with only the ravages of 30 years on the road being a stone chipped bonnet and front end and small scratches or scuffs in a few places around the car. There’s some condensation in the nearside headlight and a small chip in the windscreen that’s well out of the driver’s view, and the stitching on the rear section of the hood needs addressing, but these are all minor niggles that don’t really affect the integrity and presentation of this car as a whole.

The Mechanics
- Good service history
- Automatic gearbox with sports/ economy mode
- Last serviced in 2015 only a few thousand miles ago
- Very well cared for example
Mechanically the car is said to run very well. The gearbox is reported to be excellent and the engine is very smooth and quiet when idling. Thanks to its 231 bhp 3.0 litre six cylinder straight-six 24-valve engine the car is also very fast, drives beautifully and is a credit to its previous owner who has clearly driven it with respect.
The auxiliary belt was replaced as a precaution in the past 2 years, and it has had a new battery in the last 12 months too.Other than new spark plugs the car hasn’t been fully serviced since 2015, but has done only very low mileage since then. Those expensive common faults that effect these models (wiring harness and roof module) were also addressed by the previous owner who had both replaced shortly before selling the car
The car comes with a long MOT till April 2023, and had no advisories at the latest MOT.
The Summary
A nicely treated and well looked after original example of the superb Mercedes R129 SL with a good history and great performance, versatility and style as standard.
