1993 Jaguar XJS Convertible

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Facelift XJS
  • Desirable British Racing Green
  • 4 Owners from new

THE APPEAL

The Jaguar XJS has long been the firm favourite for drivers who demand luxury combined with refined performance.

When the launched in 1975, the new models debut may not have gone as Jaguar had intended, but by the 1990s those E-Type successor concerns were long gone.

By now the XJS was well established, with many discerning customer who enjoyed the delights of the British summer, opting for the convertible over the coupe.

The car on sale with Car and Classic is a 1993 Jaguar XJS convertible, the final facelift series that was built during Ford's ownership of the firm.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • First registered May 1993
  • Original Owner Handbook Pack
This Jaguar XJS convertible was first registered on the 7th May 1993. It was acquired by the sellers wife approximately 16 years ago and once owned a property development company called Landspeed UK Ltd.

The seller states that the XJS was last serviced on 10th June 2020 at 99,680 and there are numerous invoices in the history file which document maintenance over the years.

The V5C states that the car has had 4 owners from new.

THE INTERIOR

  • Cream Leather heated and electric seats
  • Parrot Bluetooth system
  • Dealer supplied floor matts
The interior of the XJS is a lovely place to sit and the cream leather of this example contrasts nicely with its green exterior.

The seats appear to be in good shape in the photos with some wear as to be expected on the driver's seat base and bolster. There are some marks evident here and there, however a good detail and leather treatment would work wonders. A plus is that as well as the seats being electric, the drivers has 3 memory settings and both seats are also heated.
The walnut wood veneer is starting to show its age in places, with some cracking evident to the wood around the digital clock. However all the wood fascias are present and intact.
The seller states that the electrics work as they should, as do the heated seats. He adds that the Parrot phone system works well with the factory stereo and the CD changer in the boot also works.

He goes on to say that the electric aerial goes up and down as it should.

THE EXTERIOR

  • British Racing Green
  • Original Lattice Alloy Wheels
This Jaguar XJS convertible is finished on the desirable shade of British Racing Green, with a red and silver/grey coastline and a black hood.

The metallic green paint shines up well in the photos with some marks, chips and dings present. There is a drag mark and a small dent evident on the left and right rear wing and there are some paint chips present on the arches. The coach lines are present but after 29 years they are starting to show their age.
The brightwork still has a nice shine and all the trim is present and intact. One section of trim appears to have popped slight on the right rear bumper.
The Jaguar badge on the boot has come off but the seller states that he still has it and it will come with the car.
He goes on to say that the electric top works well but it has some tears and signs of wear which are shown in the photos. The tonneau cover also comes with the car.
The lattice alloy wheels have also suited the XJS and the ones fitted to this car appear to be in nice shape, with a few blemished here and there.

THE MECHANICS

  • 4.0 litre straight six AJ6 engine
  • 4 Speed Automatic Gearbox
  • 99,980 miles
  • MOT until 2nd December 2022
This XJS has the smooth Jaguar 4.0 litre straight six which is not quite as thirsty as the mighty V12. The car has covered 99,680 miles and the seller states that it starts and drives well and has benefited from regular service in his ownership.
The car has a valid MOT until December 2022 with no advisories and a look over its previous MOT history shows it has been used sparingly since 2006.
The seller states that the tyres are all in good condition and the spare is in the boot along with the toolkit.
He does add that the air-conditioning is working but could do with regassing.
The underside photos do show some small areas of surface rust, with one spot on the sill where the factory undersea has come away. There is also a patch of rust showing on the lower edge of one of the wings, which is a common area of Jaguars of this era.

SUMMARY

The Jaguar XJS Convertible is a classic that ticks a lot of boxes. It has style, comfort, smooth performance, a decent sized boot and a roof that you can drop when the sun comes out.

This 1993 XJS needs a few cosmetics sorting but once done, it will make it a very nice example. Snap it up before the summer goes.
