The Appeal
Jaguar’s ‘Insignia’ models are so rare that even some diehard enthusiasts are barely aware of their existence. When the team of craftsmen responsible for creating the DS420 limousine found themselves underemployed on that car’s demise, Jaguar put them to work creating bespoke XJS and XJ40 models for customers. These are the Insignia cars.
XJ40 Insignias took the top specification Sovereign as their starting point. Buyers could choose individual paintwork, veneers, interiors, wheels and trim to create a highly personalised - and very expensive - alternative to the mainstream models. Just 318 left the works before the programme ended.
This car is believed to be the only Insignia finished in the rather fetching shade of Lavender metallic, a colour that harks back to a Jaguar hue popular in the 60s and 70s. It is quite superb. The elevated ‘white silk’ leather interior is also a particular highlight.
With less than 47,000 miles on the clock in the hands of just six keepers, this car is in very good order. Inspect the photos of the exterior and interior and you will struggle to find signs of its 32 years. It retains its bespoke Insignia features, that status discreetly telegraphed by a pair of small wing badges.
With a recent full service by a Jaguar specialist and long, advisory-free MOT to August 2025, this is a very rare opportunity to buy arguably one of the best and most desirable XJ40 variants that is in quite superb condition.
The vendor tells us:
“The car was in already excellent order but has wanted for nothing in my ownership. It has always been kept in a garage by all its owners, hence the the car is in first class condition.
“It is a full Insignia with a one off colour and interior combination - a very rare car. The car looks feels and drives faultlessly like new. I believe it is one of the cleanest XJ40s with the added bonus of being a full insignia. I doubt there is a better one about, never mind for sale.”
