The Appeal

The XJ40 was the first all-new XJ for decades.  It was a long time in the making, and it showed, mixing classic lines with a technologically advanced specification.  The design and engineering was so good that it underpinned Jaguar's big saloons into the new Millennium.

Key to the appeal of these cars - aside from the traditional wood and leather cabin - is the excellent AJ6 straight six engine.  It is renowned for its durability and smoothness. 

All good reasons, then, to want this very tidy three-keeper 4L XJ40.  It is in very good order thanks to a 2022 restoration and shows just 72,000 miles from new. The condition is clear from the photos and supported by a long, advisory-free MOT to March 2025. 
 

The History and Paperwork

• First registered 22nd January 1993 
• Only three previous keepers 
• Valid MOT until March 2025 with no advisories 
• Private registration and Mead of Chelmsford plates included with the car
• Second owner purchased in 1994 and retained it until 2016 
• Car has reportedly always been kept in dry storage
• Full service history including Jaguar pre-delivery inspection
• Serviced by its dealers, Mead of Chelmsford and Grange Jaguar, up until 1997
• Serviced by further specialists and a garage local to the 2nd owner
• Under previous keeper serviced by a well-renowned specialist
• In 2017 it had differential, dampers, springs and A/C rebuilt by the same company
• Underwent extensive bodywork repair and restoration in 2018, also by XJ Restorations
• The windscreen had to be custom made because it is heated - a rare factory option
• From 2020 to 2024 cared for by Just Historic Cars in St Leonards, East Sussex

The Condition

• Highly specified interior in largely original condition
• Cream vinyl dash surrounds with wooden veneers
• Wooden veneers in excellent condition with lined detailing and no cracks 
• Vinyl surrounds in very good order
• Magnolia leather seating in excellent condition with no rips or tears
• Cracked patina to the seats, commensurate with age
• Carpets in good order - the vendor believes they may have been restored
• Headlining appears clean with no major signs of staining, rips or discoloration
• All interior options reported to be in good working order with no faults
• Interior lighting working perfectly
• Boot is in excellent order with good lining, a spare wheel, toolkit and CD changer
• Beautiful deep red paintwork with striped detailing
• Largely original with some restored elements
• Offside front wing replaced in 2018
• Sills, driver’s door and sunroof panel all repaired in 2018
• Paintwork is in good order with a small blister on the bottom edge of the offside wing
• One small dent in the roof above the nearside A-pillar
• Headlight lenses are clean and fracture free
• Windscreen is a replacement, custom made and fitted in 2020
• Chrome is in good order with no major faults we can discern
• The car runs on its original Jaguar alloys, which are recently restored
• Shod in a full set of Cinturato tyres

The Mechanics 

• Powered by the 4.0L AJ6 6-cylinder powerplant

• No signs of corrosion, leaks or excessive wear to the engine bay
• The engine is completely original and unmodified.
• Car reportedly starts, accelerates, runs and brakes as expected
• No reported leaks, knocks, bangs or excessive smoke from the engine
