The Appeal
For us car enthusiasts, one of the greatest things to come out of motorsport is the 'homologation special'. The FIA specified that a competition car had to be based on a regular road car people could go out and buy. To get round this rule, manufacturers would spend vasts sums of money building a limited run of road-going versions of its race car in order to meet the pre-determined quota.
During the early 1990s, Ford wanted to build a car with Cosworth to compete in Group A rallying. The chassis and mechanicals of the existing Sierra Cosworth were used as the base, while the body resembled that of the contemporary MkV Escort. Add a huge turbo and one of the most outrageous spoilers of all time and Ford had created a legend - the RS Cosworth. Just 7,145 were built between 1992 and 1995 and collectors continue to clamour for the best original examples
This one is surely a strong contender, with just 40,900 miles on the clock and not a modification in sight. It is impeccably clean and well-preserved; a mere glance at the underside shows it to be a superlative survivor, the likes of which it could take years to find again. Having been carefully stored in an oxygen tent and never driven in the wet during current ownership, this 'Cossie' presents a significant opportunity for Fast Ford enthusiasts who want their own piece of the brand's history.
