The Corrado was seen by VW as the replacement coupe to the 2 door VW Scirocco but interestingly it was introduced some 3 years before Scirocco production ended. It was built upon the VW A2 chassis which is shared by the MK2 Golf and Jetta.
The Corrado came in a number of engine variants with the early ones being the 1.8 8V and 16V variants and then the special G60 Supercharged models. Later in production a VR6 option was added. The supercharged 1.8 litre eight valve inline four which was marketed as the G60 delivered a healthy 158 BHP which in a car of this size resulted in decent performance.
The Corrado G60 was named as such due to the G Lader scroll supercharger with which it is equipped. This supercharger was named the G Lader as the interior of it resembles the letter G.
The History
The car was purchased by the current owner in 2002 on 90+K miles and has done circa 40k in the last 18 years in her ownership. It has been a loved member of the family for many years and has had the necessary maintenance and upkeep required to keep her on the road. The car passed its last MOT in October has a number of advisories that will need attention, these were mostly around suspension bushes and the like. The MOT list is pictured.
Whilst the car does have an extant MOT it will be in need of some attention in the future particularly bodywork as detailed in the exterior section and can be seen in the photos.
The current owner has had a Cobra immobiliser fitted quite recently and the locking wheel nut is present.
The Paperwork
There is a large stack/folder of paperwork to support the car's history with MOTs and works carried out documented. The logbook is present as is the original handbook.
Although the mileage indicated was correct at the time of the photoshoot, the seller will still be using the vehicle during the auction, so please do expect the mileage to increase.
The Interior
The interior is largely original and has the comfortable signature Corrado seats and leather steering wheel. Unfortunately, it is showing its age with some wear and collapse of the drivers seat bolster which is common on these models. The interior cloth is showing further wear elsewhere and the rear bench upright does have a rip along the top seam where the stitches have given up. The drivers side speaker grill, although not fitted at present, will come with the car.
The sunroof hasn’t been used for some time and the owner is unsure if it works but it does not leak.
The Exterior
The exterior is finished in the original VW black and the car sports some genuine BBS Wheels with healthy tyres. The G60 Badges are present and overall there is no trim missing. The rear spoiler works and raises at the appropriate speed.
The bodywork however, is needing some TLC. The paintwork on the bonnet is severely faded/sun damaged and the lacquer seems to have given up. There are a number of car park blemishes around the vehicle with the worst ones being the indent on the rear bumper, passenger side lower rear quarter and front bumper corners. There are a few small patches of surface rust but the shell does not appear to be rotten, as is backed up by the recent MOT inspection.
Clearly the body would benefit from a full respray in the near future to get this rare model back to looking her absolute best.
The Mechanics
The car runs and runs well with no odd smoke present. The car has had replacement superchargers in its history though the paperwork for these is not present. There is a whine that seems to be coming from the power steering belt, there is also sometimes a clunk when putting the car into first gear.
The Appeal
Clearly this vehicle needs some love and attention to restore it to its former glory but it is fully functioning and road legal so consider it more of a rolling restoration project.
The Corrado G60 was never made in massive numbers and even less of them have survived so if you were looking for a Corrado to buy , own and restore, this is exactly the kind of car you should be looking out for. The rarity factor alone means their value is only going one way and that classic Supercharged engine makes it such a fun little car to drive.
