The Appeal

‘I had one of those!’ you say. That may be, but you didn’t have THIS one. Affectionately referred to as ‘Lady’, this is something entirely different, something special.
Rightly cosseted and mollycoddled to within an inch of its charmed life, this particular early 90’s Volkswagen Scirocco is one of the finest examples of the model this writer has had the pleasure to encounter.
The Mk2 Scirocco (1981-92) was a wedge-shaped coupé that encapsulates the 1990s. Many suggest (and this writer isn’t one of them) it was visually less appealing than the first iteration (1974-80) and yet, it was commercially more successful.

But then, in a market starved of good affordable coupés, the Scirocco was bound to thrive because it delivered and excellent drive with impeccable road manners for the era – and was available in a huge variety of engine and drivetrain configurations.
Sure, there numerous surviving Scirocco’s from the early 90s available in varying degrees of presentability.

However, few if any have been meticulously looked after and maintained as well as ‘Lady’ – one of the last to roll off Karmann’s production lines in Osnabrück, north-west Germany before production ceased a few months later.

History and Paperwork

  • Dry-stored/driven, garaged when not in use
  • One UK owner since 2003
  • Shown at UK and overseas Scirocco rallies
  • V5 certificate present and in keeper’s name
J272 XBL completed its build at the Karmann facility on Wednesday, 14th August, 1991 and received its first EU registration in April, 1992 (they ‘made ‘em and stacked ‘em in those days).

Little is known of its life on the Continent, apart from the current vendor purchasing it from a German couple. Suffice to say it was particularly well looked after by its keepers during those years.

The car was acquired by the first and current UK keeper in January, 2003. Based on the Mk1 Golf, the Mk11 Scirocco was the first VAG car to get the new 16v engine.
This is the one to have, but it's a rare car and only ever had power steering in LHD format.
This particular GT2 model is offered up for sale by the vendor to fund a new Scirocco restoration project.
Accompanying the sale will be three key fobs, a sizeable file containing the V5 certificate in the current keeper’s name, an MoT certificate valid to April, 2023, a leather holdall containing the original owner’s handbook, a workshop manual, a Certificate of Build detailing specifications of the model, an instruction manual for the JVC CD/receiver and a raft of service and maintenance documentation acquired over the years.

The Interior

  • Fully original Code 48 trim
  • Elegant period check cloth upholstery
  • Rare, factory-fitted sunroof
  • Tidy and unblemished interior
If you like your 90’s automotive offerings in an elegant blend of grey/red/yellow/green/black cloth upholstery…walk this way! A few may not like it, but many will appreciate its originality.
The well-bolstered front and rear furniture appear in excellent condition which belies its age and mileage. It is a throwback to an altogether different automotive era when things were simpler, less complicated and far easier to live with.
The dashboard, sun visors, headlining and door cards present very well, as do the bespoke ‘Scirocco’ carpets and after-market JVC CD receiver.

The stylish Rallye Digifiz 7000 digital instrument cluster and speedo is a retro-fit unit borrowed from the Golf Mk2 GTI 16v in production at the time.

The Exterior

  • Original Pearlescent Green (Code L C6V) paint finish
  • Several aesthetic modifications to the exterior
  • Brightwork is in exceptional order
This smart Mk2 Scirocco wears its original pearlescent green paintwork which presents to an extraordinary high standard.

The only exterior blemish noticed was a scuff to the offside front valance, as pictured in the accompanying gallery.
The car has received several exterior modifications, namely the Seidl front bumper, a Kamei 3-rib grill, the aforementioned Digifiz digital instrument cluster, rain sensing wipers, smoked MTS-indicators, clear MTS side lights in the bumper and a full limited edition set of 16-inch ARTEC type RE alloys shod with healthy Yokohama A539 tyres all round.

The Mechanics

  • Three original key fobs
  • Fully maintained, no expense spared
  • Mechanically sound, MoT to April 2023
At the photo location, the Scirocco was frequently repositioned to obtain the best directional light. As expected, the car started first and every time and settled into an appreciative four-pot burble.
The five speed manual gearbox connected smoothly including reverse and the clutch engaged with no drama, requiring a just the gentlest of revs to get underway.
The keeper reports the car to be in sound mechanical condition with steering, brakes, engine, drivetrain and running gear performing as well as their respective German engineers intended. It is fitted with a catalytic convertor and meets German emission standards (CO 0.02% and HC 57ppm). To note, the UK specs are 3.5% and 1200.
As one might expect of a show car, the engine bay is clean and tidy as is the spotless and original sound insulation under the bonnet. It is also one of only a few Scirocco’s fitted with a VW-original cover under the engine bay. The tidy boot contains the original VW standard diameter ‘skinny’ spare, with accompanying tools
Like the immediately visible parts of this car, the lower sills present in very good order and the underside exhibits little of the natural oxidation that may reasonably be expected on a car of this age and mileage.

Summary

There is little doubt that ‘Lady’ will be a worthy and enduring addition to any new home willing to keep her in the manner to which she has evidently become accustomed over the past 21 years here in the UK.
Try not to let the fact that it’s a left-hand drive, ex-EU model put you off. This is a perfect car for those seeking a taste of the glorious 90s automotive era – an altogether different time when driving life was less complicated and much simpler.
In addition, there is a wealth of information, technical support and comradery available at the Scirocco Register UK, the members of which are as knowledgeable, enthusiastic and approachable as they come.
