Highlights

  • Presenting in a highly original condition with all the key Rivage features present
  • A well-appointed model with full leather, electric hood and multi-function trip computer

The Appeal

It is now well known that Volkswagen were initially a little lukewarm about the idea of a fast Golf MKI. Consequently, they originally set a production target of 5,000 cars which was the amount needed for homologation for the Group One Production Touring Car class. By the time MKI Golf production ended in 1983, a total of 456,690 GTis had been produced. This success translated seamlessly into the GTi Cabriolet which continued production right through until 1993. A pair of run out models were produced with the well equipped Rivage being one of them.
This Golf GTi Cabriolet Rivage is complete with all the prestigious run-out features that set the model apart from its lesser brethren. The car presents in the rarer Classic Green Pearl metallic paintwork and seems to be in a good overall condition for its age and mileage. This is a tope end Golf GTI convertible which is ready to use and enjoy immediately by its next lucky owner.

The History and Paperwork

  • This example is a UK supplied and specification vehicle
  • It was first registered in the UK in September 1992
  • Being a run-out model for the MKI Cabriolet these were well specified cars
  • The first owner kept the car for around four years
  • A number of subsequent owners followed with some lengthy ownership periods
  • Two owners kept the car for 8 and 10 years respectively
  • The current owner acquired the Golf in April 2022
  • At that point the car had covered around 120,500 miles
  • Since then, under 2,000 further miles have been covered
  • In terms of paperwork the current V5 in the name of the owner is present
  • The car has a current MOT which is valid until December 2023
  • Some earlier MOTs in hard copy are also present
  • A couple of maintenance invoices are on hand
  • Two original VW keys are also present

The Interior

  • The key to this car’s interior is originality
  • The light beige, full leather interior was one of the key facets of the Rivage
  • The condition of the front seats is good overall
  • Just the right amount of use related patina is present
  • The only imperfection noted is a small wear hole in the driver’s outer bolster
  • Another part of the Rivage specification are the heated front seats
  • The rear seats are split into two separate units which fold individually
  • The condition is excellent with no visible signs of wear and tear
  • The black vinyl dash will be charmingly familiar to those of a certain age
  • This is all original, too, and seemingly in an excellent order
  • The original white on black VDO gauges are all original and operational
  • These are the later square items and incorporate the multi-functional digital trip computer
  • These sit behind an original four spoke, black leather GTI steering wheel
  • The centre console houses the heater and other controls
  • Electric window switches, seat heater and electric hood switches are noted
  • The beige carpets look to be in great original order throughout considering their shade
  • The door cards and rear side panels are all excellent and unmolested
  • The dark hood headlining seems to be in a fine, original condition
  • The boot features an original fitted carpet mat
  • A spare wheel, jack and tools are housed under the floor

The Exterior

  • The exterior of the GTi is thought to wear its original paint
  • This example is finished in the rarer Classic Green Pearl metallic paintwork
  • The condition of the paintwork looks good with all panels exuding a deep shine
  • The bodywork appears equally sound with tight and symmetrical panel gaps
  • Part of the Rivage specification is the painted body kit
  • This comprises body-coloured bumper covers, side skirts and wheel arch extensions
  •  The fabric hood is finished in a complimentary green hue
  • It appears to be in great shape and contains a glass and heated rear window
  • A beige tonneau cover is included to match the interior leather when stowed
  • All the appropriate Rivage badges and rear three quarters decals are present
  • The cabin glass and light lenses appear to be original and in excellent order
  • The wheels on the Rivage are the Le Castellet forged and polished 15" alloys
  • These are the correct wheels for the Rivage model and are in a good condition
  • These are shod with a matching set of Dunlop tyres with ample tread remaining
  • These are in the correct factory specification size of 185/60
  • The overall impression is strong with the level of originality being the standout feature

The Mechanics

  • This Golf GTi Rivage features a 1.8L naturally aspirated inline 4-cylinder engine
  • This is the 8V GTi engine fuelled via Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection
  • In this guise it produces around 110bhp and 112Ib-ft of torque
  • These are renowned as being robust, spirited and durable engines
  • Power is fed to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox
  • The under-bonnet condition looks mostly original
  • The suspension turrets and inner panels all look clean and free from corrosion
  • An aftermarket duct is noted between the fuel metering head and intake
  • The fuel filter notes a full service at 119,946 miles
  • The underside of the car looks generally straight and true
  • Some surface corrosion is noted but seems in line with age and mileage
  • No known mechanical issues have been reported by the owner

Summary

The run-out models for the MKI Golf GTi Cabriolets were highly specified in order to encourage sales of an outgoing, if perennially popular, model. The specification of the Rivage included some worthwhile and desirable items including the full leather interior, heated seats, painted body kit and electric hood. With a limited number originally coming to the UK, the Rivage is now a very scarce sight on our roads but remains a fun, practical and highly useable modern classic.
This example is notable for its originality. Its overall condition is good indeed, but not so good as to discourage regular use and enjoyment. The mileage represents under 4,000 a year on average and all key Rivage parts and refinements are present and correct. This car represents a fun and useable classic at an attainable price point and featuring that all important GTi badge. As such it represents a desirable and exciting ownership prospect.
