The Appeal
With summer around the corner, many of us are now looking to purchase a cabriolet for some drop-top fun, and with room for all the family, a 944 S2 is certainly a strong contender for this role.
Built during the final year of 944 S2 production, this white-over-blue example boasts a strong specification, period upgrades and would make an excellent light mechanical project, ready to enjoy throughout the summer months.
History/Paperwork
• Partial service history - 13 stamps in all
• Latest service in May 2019 at 71,268 miles
• Uk V5 registered keeper document
• No current MoT, will require a new certificate
• Please note: The vehicle was subject to a registered insurance claim around 24 years ago.
In the care of the current registered keeper since 2010, this 944 S2 has evidently been cherished throughout its lifetime, benefitting from long-term ownership and mileage-based servicing whilst in the care of the current owner.
First registered in March 1992, this last-of-the-line S2 Cabriolet boasts a delightful specification of white bodywork over a blue leather interior, and has covered limited mileage in the last ten years, amassing less than 10,000 miles since 2011.
The Interior
• Presents very well
• Period Blaupunkt radio
• Evidently cherished
On the inside, the blue leather interior has remained in excellent condition throughout the years, having evidently been cherished and cosseted throughout its lifetime, along with being testament to Porsche’s excellent build quality of the period.
Naturally, there are some signs of use - light patina, if you will - visible on the high-traffic areas such as the shifter, steering wheel, carpets and touch-points such as switches, but nothing that would not be considered commensurate for a vehicle such as this.
Similarly, in the rear the luggage compartment appears to be free of any major wear, whilst the vendor reports no faults with any switchgear, electrical systems or with the roof operation, however there may be faults not noted.
The Exterior
• Pop-up headlights in full working order
• Roof in good shape, but requires some attention to the rear screen
• Classic 80’s styling!
As with the interior, the bodywork and paint on this particular 944 S2 has seemingly stood the test of time well on the whole, with its wedge-shaped profile and pop-up headlights making it a true icon of 80’s design language.
It should be noted, as we’ve already stated, that the car was subject to a registered insurance claim around 24 years ago, but the exact details of this are unknown.
The bodywork appears overall generally very presentable however on closer inspection you are able to notice a couple of misaligned panels which may or may not be a result of the insurance claim.
In terms of the paintwork, there is the usual smattering of stone chips and light wear that would be commensurate for a vehicle of this age and mileage, examples of these imperfections have been documented in the photographs.
All four wheels remain in useable, presentable condition, though the tyres are now starting to perish and a new set would be advised.
The Mechanicals
• Running and driving
• Serviced less than 2,000 miles ago
• Some light TLC and fettling required
Under the bonnet, the 3.0-litre M44/41 inline-four engine is good order, with no signs of any major oil leaks, damage or obvious issues that we can see.
Out on the road, the vendor reports that the car starts, drives, stops and turns, but exhibits signs of what they believe may be an air/fuel mixture issue, though the exact cause of this has not been investigated.
Similarly, the manual transmission is in working order, though the vendor states it is somewhat ‘notchy’ when going through the gears, and some investigation is required.
On the whole, whilst the car starts, drives and stops, it is advised by the vendor that she will require the aforementioned niggles attending to and a full "going over" before she sees any use.
Currently, the car has no valid MoT certificate, and a new examination will need to be undertaken before it sees the road again.
Summary
Requiring some light mechanical fettling and TLC but presenting in good visual order, this 944 S2 makes a strong case for itself as a light springtime project, with the end goal being a fabulous, 80s-styled drop-top cabriolet the whole family can enjoy.
