1992 Nissan Fairlady 300ZX Convertible (Z32)

Highglights

  • A low mileage and very rarely seen example of the 300ZX V6 Convertible
  • In the same enthusiastic ownership since 2012 and lightly used
  • Complete with the much rarer and more luxurious leather upholstery

The Appeal

The first Nissan Fairlady 300ZX (Fairlady being the name the Z cars were marketed under in Japan) was launched in 1983 to replace the 280ZX and boasted the first production use of a V6 engine in the Japanese motor industry. The second generation of 300ZX came along in 1986 in this car’s Z32 guise. It was a more rounded and attractive looking package that retained the bullet proof V6 engine of its predecessor. It wasn’t until 1992 that an official 300ZX two-seater convertible came along, partly in answer to the many after-market conversions that were being undertaken.
This fine example hails from the first year of 300ZX Convertible production and is a mighty rare sight on UK roads as it was never officially imported. This one presents in a great colourway and has a pristine, leather clad cabin. The car has been fastidiously maintained and is ready to drive away and enjoy this summer.

The History and Paperwork

  • This 300ZX was from the early production of the 2 seat convertibles in 1992
  • The car remained in its native market until 1999 when it was imported to the UK
  • It was first registered here in May 1999
  • Between then and May 2012 the car was enjoyed by five UK keepers
  • The current owner acquired the car in May 2012
  • At this stage the car had covered around 59,000 miles
  • Since then, the car has been very lightly used with a mere 6,000 miles or so being added
  • The car has been fastidiously maintained by the current owner
  • The paperwork includes the current V5
  • The current MOT is present and is valid until May 2024
  • This is an advisory free MOT
  • A number of 300ZX manuals and books are included
  • There are also some original hood instructions in Japanese
  • Numerous maintenance invoices are on hand with the most recent pictured
  • There is also a laminated card detailing the cambelt replacement
  • This was carried out by specialists ZedWorld at 59,159 miles

The Interior

  • The 300ZX Convertible features a two-seater cabin
  • This example boasts the much rarer leather upholstery
  • This is finished in a light-tan hue and presents in excellent condition
  • There is just a little deterioration on the driver’s bolster which could easily be dyed
  • The seats are of an attractive design and heavily bolstered for optimum support
  • Integral headrests are fitted for additional comfort and safety
  • Strangely the seats tilt forward but there is nothing behind them
  • The seats are electrically adjustable via side mounted controls
  • The rear of the seats do contain map pockets, however
  • The light tan carpets are in a fine condition and have clearly always been protected with mats
  • Under the currently fitted light carpet mats are some original Z-branded carpet mats
  • These are pictured and are likely quite rare and collectable within JDM circles
  •  The dashboard top is finished in black with a light-tan lower panel
  • The large white on black gauges sit in a hooded binnacle
  • Pods on either side contain controls for heating and air conditioning on one side
  • The other side houses the cruise control buttons and others
  • These are directly behind the original four spoke Z monogrammed steering wheel
  • The centre console houses the Sony CD head unit
  • The large boot is carpeted in grey and houses the CD changer unit
  • A space saver spare wheel and tools are located under the floor

The Exterior

  • The 300ZX looks dramatic and eye catching in Metallic Gold paintwork
  • Records show that the car underwent a colour change from brown in 2004
  • The paintwork is in excellent condition and exudes a lovely shine
  • The only imperfection noted is a slight bubbling on the offside rear wheel arch
  • The ZX looks charmingly of its period with its wedge shape and gold livery
  • The front panel features large, faired in oblong headlamps
  • The rear aspect features a smoked glass panel and four chromed tailpipes
  • The five spoke, 16-inch alloy wheels are finished in a dark anthracite hue
  • These present in an unmarked and predominantly un-kerbed condition
  • The open style of the wheels allow the Nissan inscribed brake callipers
  • The wheels are shod in a matching set of 225/50 tyres
  • These date from 2020 or around 400 miles ago
  • The black fabric hood is in excellent condition throughout
  • The plexiglass rear windows are clear and uncracked

The Mechanics

  • The ZX is fitted with the durable VG30 3.0L V6 engine with DOHC
  • This unit was originally rated at around 220bhp and around 200Ib-ft of torque
  • Power is fed to the rear wheels via a four-speed Jatco automatic transmission
  • The under-bonnet presentation is very good
  • All the requisite data plates and workshop alerts are present
  • The underside of the car looks straight and presentable for the age of car
  • This car has been well maintained in its current ownership
  • Recent invoices show various maintenance work despite the tiny mileage covered
  • This combines with the car’s durable mechanicals and low original mileage
  • Taking these factors together and this car is assured to be in a fine mechanical order
  • The car started immediately and idled very smoothly during our visit

Summary

When you see a 300ZX convertible in the metal, and that won’t be very often, it is a surprisingly head turning car. It’s not just that rarity that gives it its allure but also its period appropriate wedge shape and charming details. It sounds good, too, with that big V6 grumbling through the quad tailpipes. With the JDM scene currently so popular in this country, these are cars that are only likely to rapidly appreciate and become increasingly sought after.
This example is in a fine and original condition. The paintwork and bodywork is in amazing shape for a 31 year old car and the anthracite coloured wheels contrast with the livery very well. The cabin is in a very fresh condition with lots of period charm also present. With its diligent maintenance and low, original mileage this is clearly a car that is going to keep heads turning for many more years to come.
