The Appeal

Before AMG became a household name, it was an independent, bespoke tuner of Stuttgart’s finest. Cars from that era, before it was subsumed into the Mercedes-Benz fold, are both rare and sought-after by collectors. These are the cars on which the AMG reputation was built.
Cars like this one, which received a comprehensive high end makeover by AMG when it was new. The engine was fully reworked, pushed out to 3.2L and hand-assembled to deliver 230bhp. The suspension was tuned and dropped and the cosmetics drizzled with tasteful AMG features, most notably the Gen 1 body kit and 17in Aeros. Inside the eagle-eyed will find yet more AMG features.
The car is in highly original condition - it even has its factory Becker Le Mans radio - and is very well preserved thanks to a cossetted life in the dry climes of South Africa. It arrived in the UK last year.
Recent work has included a new water pump and radiator plus attention to the ignition system. The car has been freshly servied and carries a current, advisory-free MOT. This is a very usable and exceptionally rare example of a highly regarded executive express. Perfect for your collection.
The vendor says:
“Having come from a dry climate, the underside is in incredible condition with zero corrosion and no evidence of accident damage. The exterior paintwork is largely original and presentable but to make perfect it would benefit from some cosmetics as the paint has some chips and blemishes. Note, we have sourced replacement jacking point covers (missing on the photos) that will come with the car.
“The interior is very nice - there are no dash cracks and the instrument needles remain orange, suggesting that this car has been garaged for the majority of its life with only some light cracking to the wood trim around the gear lever gives away its 32 years.
Correct, engine-converted, pre-merger AMG Mercedes are rare and very desirable in themselves. Right-hand drive examples are vanishingly rare. A very exciting opportunity for AMG aficionados.”
