The Appeal
The Mercedes-Benz R129 convertible, like all the previous SL roadsters, was the torchbearer of the marque. Mercedes poured everything they had into the model in terms of design, engineering and build quality. In five-litre V8 form, its performance was formidable, while those opting for the three-litre, in-line six still got a lively runner, while enjoying all the soft-and-hardtop touring versatility that the bigger-engined model offered.
The R129’s chiseled, angular looks were understated, allowing it, as the years have gone on, to evolve into a true classic without appearing faddish or gimmicky. In terms of capabilities, the model has lost nothing in terms of what it offered when it hit the streets back in 1989.

Summary
The Mercedes R129 convertibles are now very much taking their place alongside their forebears in the classic SL line-up, and values are firming up accordingly. Like its siblings, this generation offers great versatility – a practical, sporting tourer that is almost too sensible to be an indulgence… almost.
Parts supplies are plentiful, and expert servicing relatively easy to find. If the R129 is your first foray into classic ownership, it’s a good choice.
