1992 Mercedes-Benz 230E (W124)

Highlights

  • Under single ownership from new until 2021, with accompanying extensive stamped service history
  • Gorgeous colour combination of Blue Pearl over a fabulous period grey cloth interior
  • Potential for return to original specification or continued modified cool

The Appeal

Produced between 1984 and 1997, the W124 is an executive saloon from Mercedes Benz built during a period widely considered to represent the zenith of the brand. Featuring innovations such as Mercedes’ then new multi-link rear axle suspension and hitherto unseen levels of active and passive crash protection, the W124 was a supremely competent machine clothed in an attractively understated exterior.
With a reputation for very strong and reliable mechanicals and unmatched Teutonic build quality, the W124 now makes for a very appealing early ‘90’s modern classic, with the 230E model offered here being no exception.
Presented in the fabulous shade of Pearl Blue paint over a grey cloth interior, this low mileage (66,194 miles) 230E was under single ownership from new until 2021. Coming with an extensive stamped service history book and having always been garaged, this solid well maintained example now presents an exciting opportunity for its next owner - whether that be a return to charming originality or the ongoing pursuit of modified cool.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5C present
  • 3 former keepers from new
  • MOT valid until 11/09/2023 with no advisories
  • Fully stamped original service book featuring main dealer and specialist garage stamps
  • Original dealer documentation

The Interior

  • Stunning interior presenting in a largely original condition, totally in keeping with Mercedes’ reputation for build quality during this era.
  • Seats and interior soft fabrics all appearing in an excellent and almost unworn condition despite their 30 year age
  • Burr walnut veneer trim presenting in fabulous condition, complete and without any significant signs of wear or tear
  • Optional retracting rear headrests operated by dashboard switch
  • Headlining in great condition and featuring operational electric sunroof
  • Unobtrusive modern Kenwood stereo system with USB input
  • All interior equipment reported to be functioning as intended
  • Classic ‘90s grey patterned cloth interior, well matched to exterior Blue Pearl paintwork
  • Aftermarket OMP branded steering wheel with a hand-finished wood rim. Well matched to the car’s original interior walnut trim
  • Clean and capacious boot area with spare tyre

The Exterior

  • Attractive Pearl Blue paint complimented by lower body trim panels in a darker shade
  • Paint presenting in a generally good condition, with some expected scuffs and superficial scratches commensurate with the age and mileage of the car
  • Car currently sitting with a purpose lowered stance as a result of a change to stiffer and shorter springs by the previous owner
  • Large 18 inch BBS split-rim style alloy wheels presenting in good condition and shod in recent rubber with excellent tread
  • Some areas of minor visible bodywork bubbling in known W124 areas, chiefly noted over the offside front wing
  • Two small dinks under rear nearside light cluster and a small dent over the rear offside wheel arch - all of which would appear to be amenable to a paintless dent removal
  • External brightwork and trim appear original and present in a good condition
  • Glass and external lighting appear original and in great condition

The Mechanics

  • 2299cc inline 4 cylinder petrol engine with reputation for excellent reliability
  • Original service manual documenting extensive service history over the life of the car whilst under original ownership
  • Reported to start keenly and perform very well out on the road, delivering its power smoothly via a 4-speed automatic transmission
  • Reported to kick down appropriately on acceleration, with E and S gearbox modes functioning as expected
  • Last MOT noted to contain no advisories
  • Reported by owner to be solid underneath and free of any significant corrosion

Summary

As capable today as it was back in 1992, this 230E offers its new owner the opportunity to acquire a low mileage and low ownership example in a largely original condition. With bags of potential, whether that be a return to original specification or indeed further modification, this W124 will certainly make for a stylish and desirable understated modern classic.
