The Appeal
A mere glance at the Land Rover's illustrious military history reveals why these humble 4x4s are such an integral part of British culture. Land Rovers have served the Armed Forces since 1949 and continue to perform a key roll in the 21st Century.
Periodically, these Land Rovers are replaced with newer models, and this 1992 Defender 90 was retired in 2011. Today, its (somewhat lighter, yet no less important) duties include delivering food and water to the vendor's daughter's pony and the occasional trip when it snows. That means this Defender has covered minimal mileage - around 500 miles per annum over the past four years.
It has proven its reliability time and again, living up to its 'bulletproof' reputation. With a new MOT valid until July 2025 it's ready for its next adventure. Whether you're a military vehicle enthusiast or simply in need of a robust and dependable 4x4, this Defender is worthy of serious consideration.

History and Paperwork
- Purchased by the vendor from government surplus disposal agents in 2011, having been recently retired from Army service
- MOD number plate was '58KK29', so it may be possible to trace service history
- The vendor showed the vehicle at the War and Peace show in 2012
- Purchased for practical reasons and winter fun, regularly delivering food and water to a pony
- New MOT certificate valid until July 2025
- Vehicle has done less than 500 miles per annum for at least the past four years
- Decided to sell due to infrequent use, currently parked outside under sheeting
- No MOD service records accompany the car, but these Land Rovers had to be kept in excellent working order at all times while in service
- Most post-military disposal service records included in the sale
- Please note that the odometer is currently stuck and revolves between the 100,000km and 100,009km marks - refusing to turn over the next set of digits to 100,010km and onwards
The Condition
- Overall bodywork is in good order for an former military vehicle
- Some signs of corrosion present on the front bumper and windscreen struts
- Some paintwork has been patch-repaired in the past as befits a vehicle of this nature
- Historic MOD metal patch repair on the driver's door to cover a small hole (possibly a bullet hole!)
- The chassis and running gear shows some signs of corrosion, currently acceptable for MOT testing
- Good, clean interior with a minor tear on the passenger's seat cushion
- The odometer is not working properly, but otherwise we understand the instruments and electrics to be in fine shape
- Original gun racking still in place behind the driver's seat
- Modifications include two lateral bench seats with seat belts in the rear and an added step for easier access
- Comes with two front wing radio boxes and two side 'candle' aerial mounts
- Aerials for the mounts included in the sale
- Real eye-catcher, especially with aerials fitted, and the vendor comments that the Land Rover draws a lot of interest from other road users
This Land Rover presents very well for its age and is commendably original. It retains several interesting accessories from its British Army days including aerial mounts and even gun racks! While the vendor recommends some preventative maintenance to the developing underside corrosion, the recent MOT pass suggests this is a very sound example.
The Mechanics
- 2.5-litre (2,495 cc) NA four-cylinder diesel engine
- Five-speed manual gearbox
- Mechanically very sound, always starts first time, no known issues
- New starter motor fitted a couple of years ago
- New exhaust and horn fitted during the most recent MOT
- We're informed that it has proved "super reliable", and excels in snowy or flooded conditions
When asked to sum up what this Land Rover has been like to live with, the vendor provided the following account:
"The vehicle is super reliable and has never let me down. It comes into its own in snowy of flooded conditions and will go almost anywhere. If you're looking for speed, this isn't the vehicle for you! Be prepared to be overtaken by juggernauts on motorways and experience the acceleration rate of a vintage tractor. On the plus side, the lack of power steering means that regular drivers will soon have a toned upper body!"
