The Background

The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van was manufactured from 1964 to 1996 replacing the rear engine Corvair Corvan. The platform was the basis for a variety of configurations, from passenger vehicles to full blown campers like the one presented for auction here.
The Chevy Van spanned three generations and was sold under both the Chevrolet and GMC brand name. It was initially sold as a forward control vehicle, much like a lorry, with the engine between the two front passengers, by the third generation, it was a much more conventional front engine layout.
The G20 used a unibody chassis and derived mechanical components from the first two generations. In production for 25 years, it became one of the longest-produced vehicle platforms designed by GM.

The History

The current owner purchased the Day van from its previous owner who sadly passed away after owning the van from 2015. Since then, the current owner has fixed any issues on the van and used it for what its best at, going on adventures.

The Day Van comes with everything you might need for a life on the road and is basically a mobile apartment with the amount of living space you get in the back.

The paperwork

The Day van comes with lots of paperwork to back up its care during the current and previous owners time with the van since 2013. The van also has its V5 with old V5’s also present.

The Iceni Autos service book is present with stamps from 2015 to 2018, old MOT certificates from 2012 until present and one from 2005.

The van has had a full HPI check showing that its clear of finance, insurance claim or mileage discrepancy, for full peace of mind when purchasing.

The Interior

Remaining equipped with both the original and spare keys, inside the van you are greeted with purple valour upholstery along with some grey and wood trim, a theme that is carried throughout the inside and outside, matching the custom graphics, side skirts and roof highlights.

Accompanied by fully functioning air con, recently converted from R12 to R134A, the interior is in very good condition with no rips or tears to be found in any of the seats and all doors and compartments being in good condition also. Additional luxuries include captains seat in cabin, cruise control, side bars / steps, windscreen canopy, twin mirrors Blaupunkt Buenes Aires Radio/CD,cabin shutter type blinds, sink with water storage, crockery, reversing camera and screen, extra set of towing mirrors, factory fitted removable towbar and electrics front spot lights, front & rear fog lights, fridge, 240v power, numerous power outlets and much more.
Driving the day van around must feel like driving a living room around with the layout and amount of space it affords the owner. It has the benefit of a lifted roof as well, meaning headroom is not a problem and with ‘captain’ style chairs, it means that no-one needs to be left out in the cold.

The Exterior

The Turtle Top Day Van has quite a presence on or off the road, resembling a small RV rather than a van. Starting at the front though, the four headlights and grille were an optional extra available with the higher spec vans. The raised roof is reminiscent of the VW camper vans with the Westfalia conversion, and the roof rack on top of that means that load space is not an issue with the Chevy Van.
Moving round the van, you can really appreciate the custom paintwork and there are some aftermarket side skirts giving the already wide van a meaner and lower look, with tinted windows helping to keep privacy at a maximum. The van has deep dish chrome wheels with Nankang tyres with 7mm front tread and 8mm rear tread, also coming with Chevrolet wheel nut caps all round and a rear mounted spare with a ladder to the roof on the back.
At the right-hand side of the van is where you’ll find the awning and bay doors to the inside, the awning giving good coverage from any inevitable downpour you’re likely to experience in the UK. Potential buyers will be pleased to hear that the awning is simple to put up and take down should you need to make a speedy get away from the campsite.
Finishing off at the front again and the windscreen has a canopy to help with sunlight and rain whilst the front also has a bevy of spotlight to help illuminate the road ahead.

The Mechanics

As said earlier, the van will have a new MOT until September 2022, having failed on rear brakes needing to be bled, the van has had a sympathetic recommission by the current owner and has been working well since. Some of the work included; new correct oil filter fitted, air conditioning charged,

The mechanicals of this behemoth have been gone over with a fine-tooth comb with a full service being carried out in September at 73,480 miles and an auto transmission service and new power steering pump and hose being installed in December of last year at 73,565 miles. Since then, it has been driven to the coast and back with no issues at all for a weekend of camping.
All electricals and mechanicals work as they should and promise to provide the new owner with plenty of trouble-free miles. The engine roared into life with no hesitation, idled smoothly and the gearbox engaged gears without any noises or crunches.

The Appeal

If you’ve got a taste for adventure and dream of the nomadic lifestyle but also appreciate some of life comforts, then the Chevy Van is a tempting compromise. With enough space and luxuries afforded for you to put your feet up with a cuppa and relax in style whilst still being capable of hauling itself around thanks to 5.7L of good ol’ American iron the Chevy van is not just a van but a romantic notion of exploring.
Add to the fact that this van could be the basis for some cherished family memories or some much needed escapism from the real world at the moment, that the A-team had one and children of the 80’s and 90’s will be in full nostalgia mode looking at this van.
