The Appeal
The second generation of the 3 Series the now famous E30 BMW appeared to be more evolution than revolution at first glance. However, a new interior and revised suspension made sure that the E30 was the 3 series to have. In 1987 it would undergo a mid-life facelift.
Offered as a convertible from the start the E30 was the perfect all-rounder, and this example is just waiting for you to get in and explore the world's roads.
The History and Paperwork
- Rolling off the production line in April 1992 this E30 has gone on to live a happy life
- Between the previous owner, the car appears to have been looked after
- The current owner acquired the car in 2015
- In January of the same year, it had a new Mohair hood fitted
- It has recently had circa £1,100 spent on it
- This included work to the interior and folding roof mechanism
- Over the years the previous owners have kept some invoices and MOT certificates
- It has just been through an MOT so you’ll have 12 months of MOT with the car
- The car has a current V5 present
- It is now your chance to add to the car's history
The Interior
- The interior of this E30 is presented in rather nice condition indeed
- Fitted with sporty black leather seats it is a lovely place to sit
- These black leather seats are still in great condition
- No damage can be observed on the front two seats
- This condition is mirrored by the two rear bucket-like seats
- Contrasting the black leather seats the carpets and door cards are presented in grey
- All of the carpets fitted to this E30 are in great condition
- This can also be said for the door cards
- There are a few cracks to the black plastic dashboard and some damage to the driver’s sun visor
- Other areas surrounding the dashboard are in good condition
- Including the centre console, and instrument binnacle
- The electric windows were tested on the day, and they all work as they should
- With the roof down we can take a look at some areas usually hidden
- These areas include the top of the windscreen and surrounding trim
- The rear deck area is in good condition and pops open to reveal the fabric roof
- With the rear deck open you can easily erect the roof
- During the photo shoot the roof was erected with ease between two people
- Locking into position it revealed a well preserved headliner inside
- The boot was inspected during the shoot, and we found a few spare parts, a warning triangle, and the original jack
- On the boot lid is where you’ll find the original tool kit
- This tool kit has retained all but one of its original tools
- Overall, the interior is in good overall condition with everything present
The Exterior
- Externally this E30 320i is a bit of a looker
- Finished in Diamantschwarz (diamond black) metallic it sparkled nicely in the sun
- There were a few areas where the original paint shows its age but there were very few, if any, areas of paint bubbling
- The boot lid has some light scratches, and the front bumper had a slight scuff
- With a proper polish, the exterior should look even better
- With the roof up we could give the fabric roof a good inspection
- You can see from the photos that this roof section is in great condition
- The black fabric is free of any fabric pulls or holes
- It pulls taught over the frame and locks into place easily
- This E30 is fitted with a nice set of BBS alloy wheels
- All four wheels appear to be in lovely condition
- There are marks present on some of them
- Overall, the exterior of this E30 is present well for its age
- Its boxy design has attracted a loving following and we can see why
The Mechanics
- Under the bonnet, you’ll find the M20 2.0L inline-four engine
- This is then mated to an automatic gearbox sending power to the rear wheels
- On the day of the photoshoot, the car performed very well indeed
- It started every time without any problems
- There is a shot of the dash with the car running showing no warning lights
- Slipping it into drive allowed us to manoeuvre the car around the gravel drive
- It would then select reverse without any un-due noises
- The steering felt nicely weighted and didn’t seem to produce any loud noises when on full lock
- The car’s MOT has recently run out so the current owner will put a new one on it before you pick it up
- The current owner also mentioned that the head gasket was recently replaced
- After its recent MOT the suspension arms were replaced
- Overall, this E30 320i appears to be in good running condition
