1991 Toyota Carina 1.6 Matchplay Limited Edition

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rare Limited Edition Carina II XL Matchplay which marked Toyota GB’s sponsorship of the 1991 Matchplay Golf Tournament
  • Toyota Dealership display car for many years
  • Just 2 owners from new

THE APPEAL

Toyota launched the first generation Carina in 1970 and it quickly established itself as a reliable and dependable family saloon. Fast forward to 1988 and the Japanese marque unveiled the 5th generation of the mid-range platform, which was sold as the Carina II in European markets. In 1991 to mark Toyota GB’s sponsorship of the 1991 Matchplay Golf Tournament, a Limited Edition Carina II XL Matchplay was offered to UK customers. The Matchplay model was painted in Wentworth Green Metallic and even came with a set of golf clubs. Offered for sale here on Car and Classic is a remarkable 1991 Toyota Carina II XL Matchplay survivor, which spent a number of years as a display car at a Toyota main dealer in Kent.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • 2 owners from new and originally sold in Kent by Motorline Toyota dealership in Canterbury
  • V5C Registration document and an older style V5C
  • Three sets of keys including the rare key code metal tag
  • First registered on 14th October 1991, three days before the Matchplay tournament teed off at Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey.
  • Odometer shows just 77,399 miles from new
  • It has a current MOT until 12th December 2023 with no advisories
  • The car is supplied with the original Owners Handbook pack
  • The Carina was traded in at the Toyota dealership in Canterbury where it was originally purchased new. The dealership decided to keep the car due to its rarity and was put on display in the showroom.
  • This particular Carina II is one of the last Japanese built model, before production moved to the UK.

THE INTERIOR

  • The interior presents very well with only minimal signs of wear and is remarkably well preserved
  • The cloth seats are in great shape and the seller believes they had protective seat covers from new
  • As this Carina was a Matchplay Edition it came with electric windows in the front and an electric sunroof
  • The seller confirms that everything works as it should
  • There is some fraying on the handbrake cover and a small area of damage to the drivers door B pillar rubber. There is also a very small nick in the paint on the right passenger inner wheel arch. These are shown in the photos.

THE EXTERIOR

  • This Carina Matchplay is finished in Wentworth Green Metallic, which was Toyota GB’s colour for this limited edition model.
  • The rare colour scheme is in very good condition all round and the car was resprayed by the Motorline Toyota dealership prior to going on display in its showroom approximately 7 years ago
  • The electric sunroof works and both tilts and slides
  • There are a few trim pieces that require attention, such as the front passenger door strip which has a slight dent and is slightly raised at one end. And on the right rear corner of the bumper, the red stripe has pulled upwards
  • There is a small scuff on the right corner of the front bumper

THE MECHANICS

  • 1.6 litre 16v engine which is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox
  • The car comes with its original service book with the last stamp recorded on 24th September 2013 at 75,736 miles. The car is now showing 77,399 on the clock.
  • The seller states that the Carina would have been serviced by the dealership after its respray and suggests a full service be carried out before returning the car to regular use
  • The carburettor has been recently rebuilt. The seller notes that since the carb rebuild the car doesn’t like idling and seems to be running rich as it is a little smokey on start up. As the car has been on static display for many years the seller states that it would benefit from a thorough service and then a good drive.

SUMMARY

Once a common sight on UK roads, the trusty 5th generation Carina II is now a very rare spot indeed. Even more rare is the Limited Edition Matchplay. According to the website Howmanyleft, as of 2022 there were just 8 Matchplay editions taxed in the UK. So the chances of bumping into another one are very slim indeed. This would make a great entry level classic, one thats very practical with a nice range of extras. It even has space in the boot for a set of golf clubs!
