1991 Porsche 944 S2

Highlights

  • Immaculate low mileage, late model S2
  • Meticulous service history with 22 stamps
  • Recently recommissioned by Brightwells
  • Just two owners from new, current since 1 month old
  • Long MOT to November 2024 with no advisories
  • Fantastic ‘unicorn’ buying opportunity

The Appeal

The 944 and 924 shared a profile but by 1991 were entirely different cars. A typically Porsche improvement process saw this most capable of coupes evolve into a credible alternative to the iconic 911.
Later S2 cars with their 3litre engines, Turbo aesthetics and improved transmissions are particularly sought after.
This example is the proverbial unicorn. 32 years on from the end of 944 production day it is about as close to buying a new one as it is possible to get. This car was one of the last built and has been recently recommissioned by a senior member of the Porsche Club GB including full service and belt change.
It is an exceptionally low mileage, standard car with just two owners from new – he acquired it two weeks after the dealership registered it. The history file is impeccable, showing a run of 22 service stamps with extra brake and condition checks. There is also a long MOT to November 2024 with no advisories.
The condition reflects those key points. This really is a superb vehicle, inside, outside and under, which is collector quality standard.  It looks ready to reward the very lucky buyer.

The Condition

  • Exceptional black on black colour scheme with barely any signs of wear
  • Condition reflects the single main owner and vanishingly low mileage
  • One of the last built and well specified by dealer including electric sunroof
  • We are told there are some minor paint marks but these are not immediately visible in photos
  • The owner reports a small scuff on the rear panel below the light
  • Unmarked lightly anodised grey factory 7 spoke alloy wheels in immaculate condition
  • Equipped with Pirelli tyres
  • Interior in superb condition with barely any wear to oft-trafficked surfaces like seat bolsters
  • Switchgear in virtually ‘as new’ condition and highly original including period Blaupunkt stereo
  • Porsche embossed seats and door cards
  • Fitted with a factory immobiliser
  • Electric sunroof, windows and partial electric operation to seats
  • Carpets in virtually as new condition and mats likewise
The S2 adopted the purposeful aesthetics of the Turbo, cleverly transforming the original 924 underpinnings into a much more sporting coupe. Certain colours flatter the attractive profile and black is certainly one of them.
It would be easy to wax lyrical about the condition of this car because it really is quite exceptional.  But perhaps it is easier and quicker for buyers to review the photographs.  Even close up detail shots reveal its quality. It is a testament to the low mileage and careful owner and a treat for the eyes wherever you look.

The Mechanics

  • Revised 2,969cc 4cyl engine fitted to the S2 delivering over 200bhp to the rear wheels
  • 5spd manual gearbox
  • 0-60mph in under 7secs
  • Impeccable service history with recent recommissioning including belts by Brightwells
The 944 had been steadily catching up with the 911 but the introduction of the 3litre version of the 4cyl engine appropriately turbocharged that drive. Now equipped with over 200bhp, the well balanced 944 was a close match for the 911 but with more predictable handling.
S2 cars also got an improved gearbox and gearing. Only a few thousand were built before production switched to the 968, and this car is likely one of the last.
Considering the car’s remarkable history it will not surprise readers to hear that the vendor describes it as driving ‘like new.’ He should know because he is a senior member of Porsche Club GB with experience of the company’s many remarkable cars. A recent refresh by Brightwells – including service and belts as detailed above – has likely improved the car, but its fundamental quality shines through in the photographs and history.
