The Background
The Mercedes Benz W124 series was produced from 1984 to 1997, in a range of body styles the addition of the coupe gave the range a sporting pedigree. The Sportline
designation gave the car a higher specification over the standard model with wider wheels and wider profile tyres, quick ratio steering and a smaller diameter steering wheel, “sportline” badges on the front wing mouldings and gear knob, a slightly lower ride height and a specially tuned suspension that included shorter, stiffer springs, struts, anti-roll bars and bushings.
The 300 CE-24 valve is considered a desirable car in the range and highly sought after.
The History
This “Sportline” model comes with a sporting pedigree as it was first owned by South African tennis player, Danie Visser, and then Belgian tennis start Eric Drossart. The third owner was then golfing legend Sir Nick Faldo, so if a car was aptly named then it is this car under the Sportline logo.
The original owner, Danie Visser specced the car to a high level, the features include
electric front seats with memory function (driver), factory sunroof, heated front seats, air-conditioning and cruise control. Another nice addition is the belt butler automated seat belt system, giving the car an air of class and style.
The Paperwork
The car has a comprehensive service history from day one, with the original stamp from the Mercedes-Benz factory where it is believed the original owner collected the car from. The service booklet is stamped throughout and was last serviced in June 2021, it also comes with a recent MOT that expires in November 2022.
The original manuals, car brochure and records are all present along with two keys.
The Interior
The full black leather interior is in very good condition, with no wear visible on the rear seats at all. The original first aid kit is still present in the rear shelf and the only sign of damage is on the inside of the rear windscreen, the crack is on the inside of the laminate.
There are some holes on the passenger side of the centre console where a mobile phone housing would have been located originally, also the drivers seat has some creasing which is to be expected with the cars age and mileage. The rear of each seat facing does have light marks around the edges. Both door cards are clean and have held up well with all wood veneers and leather clear of any wear at all.
All electrics work, including the sunroof, rear windows, seats and radio/CD player. The boot area is very clean and under the boot carpet is an unused spare wheel and tool kit.
The Exterior
The cars paintwork is in good order, a few minor stone chips are visible close up, mainly on the driver and passengers outer door mirror casings. There is no visible corrosion on the bodywork whatsoever according to the current owner.
The tyres are matching Continentals and are wrapped around the original eight hole alloy wheels. The alloys are in good condition, three do have some very light scuff marks on them and as shown in the photos, with two facings starting to bubble slightly.

The Mechanics
The car comes with a comprehensive record of its service history in the form of a stamped book and receipts. The car was last serviced in June 21 at 103598 miles by Staithes garage in Gateshead, this consisted of the standard oil, filter and brake fluid change.
The car has had new ignition leads, a new distribution cap and spark plugs within the last 12 months. It is also worth noting that the recent advisories for an oil leak were attended to and repaired accordingly.
All electrics are functioning as they should.

The Appeal
A high factory specified 24 Valve Mercedes coupe with sporting prominence, with the Sportline trim and upgrades as well is a rare and stylish GT for any occasion.
Also the addition of three sporting legends having owned the car does add to its provenance and although thirty years old still looks sleek, the perfect car for the avid golfer, that boot will take a few sets of clubs and certainly you’ll have bragging rights at the 18th with Sir Nick having graced the driver's seat of the rare 300CE!
