1991 Honda CBR1000F-L

Highlights

  • One owner since new
  • Good condition all round
  • Recent financial spend to get the bike back to good working condition after sitting for some time
  • Started on the button on the photoshoot

The Appeal

Honda’s first inline four, fully faired sport/tourer bike, the CBR 1000F had a production run that spanned over a decade from 1987 to 1999. Powered by a liquid cooled, DOHC, 998cc, 16 valve, carburettor fed engine, the CBR put out around 135bhp and went on to a top speed of 160 mph. It was also the first bike that Honda used its DCBS or Duel Combined Braking System, an addition that has since evolved into being a welcome presence on many Honda touring bikes.

The History and Paperwork

  • Purchased new in 1991
  • Comes with original owner’s manual and service book with stamps
  • Full V5C
  • Stacks of tax and MOT documents
  • Invoice from recommission after sitting for a while totalling £1,473
  • Invoice states exact work that was carried out
  • Bike was MOT’d and road tested at time of recommission

The Interior

  • The handlebars and forks are in good condition from visual inspection, little wear to the handlebar rubbers and only some paint chips to highlight with the front fork
  • The rear swing arm shows some minor signs of wear as well as the underside, but all in line with the age and mileage of the bike
  • Under the seat and from what we can see of the interior of the bike, is all in good condition, limited paint scuffs under the seat on the frame and the engine and surrounding compartment look to be in good condition too

The Exterior

  • Straight out of the 90’s the colour scheme of this bike perfectly suits the era
  • Farings and panels are all original, showing minimal signs of wear but some scuffs and minor sections around the high traffic areas
  • Wheels look to be in great condition and the tyres look to have plenty of tread with no visible signs of cracking
  • The exhaust has had a repair, during the recommission, and is now sounding great again
  • Bike has a centre stand and side stand but only the centre was used on the photoshoot for ease of movement around the bike, both are reported to be in good condition as you can see from the photos
  • The front windscreen, lights and other plastics around the bike show little to no signs of fogging or serious scratches or cracks
  • The seat is in good condition too with no seen rips or tears during the photoshoot, even the underside of the seat looked to be very clean

The Mechanics

  • The engine had been recommissioned during the recent expenditure after spending some time off the road
  • All electrics are reported to be working and the bike fired up on the button from cold during the photoshoot. It idled and warm up quickly then kept consistent temperature for the duration of running
  • The owner reports this bike benefits from the Honda reliability and points out its superb long distance touring capability

Summary

This is a fantastic looking bike, with a retro colour scheme that will really get necks turning. Whilst the CBR might not have set the world alight when it was introduced, it had a decade long production run, comfortable ride, superb build quality and good handling. It ticked a lot of boxes for a lot of people and gained itself a nice little fan base for its troubles. If you’re a rider who likes to tour and is perhaps a little too…sensible for the hard suspension, ‘angry dog on a leash’ type sports bikes of the time, it’s hard to go wrong with a bike like this. In addition to all that, a one owner, well taken care of CBR 1000 FL has to be a rare thing in itself, which should really put the new owner’s mind at ease.
