The Appeal
Known by the end of the 1980s primarily for their executive saloons, we imagine it came as a surprise to many when BMW launched a two-seater sports roadster. The Z1 was to be the first in BMW’s successful ‘Z’ line which continues to this day. Its stand-out feature was of course its vertically retracting doors - a design that has never been replicated since.
This 1991 Italian example is in very good original condition, benefiting from maintenance, careful storage and few kilometres on the odometer. The vendor informs us that it runs and drives very well indeed and that owning it has fulfilled a childhood ambition. With just three owners from new, this cherished Z1 awaits its next custodian.
The History and Paperwork
- The Z1 originally belonged to a family in Aosta, who passed it between two family members before a friend of the vendor bought it
- In present ownership since 2020
- Valid Revisione certificate
- 27,835 kilometres indicated and supported by the servicing/technical inspection history
- Some service history is documented in the original maintenance schedule and a series of invoices
- Kept in a garage by the vendor when not in use
- Registered with the ASI
The Condition
- Well-preserved original condition
- Retains its original and unusual ‘camouflage’ upholstery
- The soft top is in good overall condition, with a clear rear window
- The doors both operate as BMW intended
- Small BMW badge patch is sewn into the roof on the nearside
- Besides some very slight blemishes, the alloy wheels present very well
- The vendor points out a slight crack to the nearside front wing and a broken panel to the inside of the offside front wheel arch
- The small plastic cover on the left side of the cabin is slightly misaligned
- Barely any wear to the controls
- All appears in good order underneath, especially considering the car’s age
The Mechanics
- 2.5-litre petrol straight-six
- Five-speed manual gearbox
- Amongst the first BMWs to utilise multi-link rear suspension
- The vendor reports that it starts readily, runs well and drives exactly as it should
