The Background
The Alfa Romeo was styled by car designer Walter De Silva, adding Italian flair to a
A practical family hatchback made the 33 model the alternative choice to the popular Escort and Astra’s of the nineties that could be seen virtually on every street corner.
The car was produced from 1983 and finished production in 1995, shifting over 1 million units in total; it was a great success for the Italian company and was an affordable way into the brand. The 1.5 litre boxer engine produced a respectable 96 bhp, weighing in at only 970 kilos it felt a lot quicker than it actually was and was praised by the motoring press of the day for its handling and characterful engine.
The History
This Alfa Romeo 33 has only had two owners in its lifetime, the current seller acquired the vehicle as it was deemed uneconomical for repair due to the paintwork which had been damaged by chemicals. The car then had a full respray, during its lifetime it has remained in East Kent and had extensive main dealer services though Alfa and specialist dealers. The seller has maintained the car to a high standard and in February it had a service, followed by an MOT in June of this year.
The vehicle is up for sale due to lack of use and space, it is a reluctant sale and the car has remained in original condition as much as possible.
The Paperwork
With only two owners the car has a wealth of paperwork, original manuals, service stamps in the book and receipts for the majority of parts required when needed. The last service was February 2021 and MOT in June 2021, with two advisories. The car does come with two sets of keys.
The Interior
The interior is in very good condition, the walnut steering wheel and gear knob are like new. All of the fabric on the seats are in superb condition and show the care and respect this car has had in its thirty years. The photographs show that there is a small crack on the off side rear door inner card , also on the front grab handles, driver and passenger side show wear and tear.
The interior boot carpet and floor carpets are, as you'd expect, in very good condition due to the two owners only having this vehicle. One note is that the Blaupunkt stereo is not working, it does just need recoding as it shows power to the unit, although the LCD
The display is slightly damaged.
The Exterior
The Rosso red paintwork is in very good condition, from the respray as you’d expect it is free of any major marks. There are some light scuffs on the off side front bumper corner and passenger side door mirror casing. All genuine Alfa alloys are in exceptional condition, the near side rear has a very slight scuff. Good Year tyres are on all four wheels and in good condition with plenty of tread. The full size spare is also in good order.
The photographs show some areas which require touch ins, notably the drivers door edge, bonnet edge and on the near side boot lid edge. The light panel that goes along the rear of the car has a crack in the centre of the plastic. The bonnet does also have a small dent near the near side front corner.
The Mechanics
The car runs smoothly with engine idle as you’d expect from the Boxer engine, purring away with a smooth ticker. The gears are smooth but the owner does mention that the second gear synchro is lazy to go in, a notable problem on this model that would require some attention. The front suspension does have a slight creaking and this is down to the front bushes which again would need looking at in time.
The Appeal
The Alfa Romeo brand is steeped in motorsport history, with this modern classic the Italian designer Walter De Silva produced a timeless yet practical sporting hatchback. This car comes with great ownership, the popular Rosso red paintwork and a punchy and rewarding 1.5 litre Boxer engine.
This car is perfect for a daily driver with a difference, practical, fun and also not out of place at a classic car show during those Spring and Summer months.
