THE APPEAL
Back when mopeds were the ultimate sign of rebellion. A change in legislation in the early 1970s meant gone were the days where the youth of the time could jump on any high capacity offering from Norton, BSA or the emerging Japanese brands. A 50cc limit was now imposed for young riders and manufacturers had to act quickly to capitalise on it. What resulted was an entirely new market for sporty 50cc bikes designed to appease the young and rebellious, one of the most notable of which was the now legendary Yamaha FS1.
Designed with performance in mind the 50cc, two stroke single cylinder, FS1, or FS1-E in the case of English models, was introduced in the early ’70s and interestingly Yamaha found enough stock in the late ‘80s to reintroduce it, this is one of those last runout models. If you own one of the first ones, this is one of the last ones.
This numbers matching 1990 FS1-E is as good as the early versions, with a new rear fairing design and benefitting from fewer than 10,000 miles from new, a recent carb re-build and a new 12 months MOT certificate.
