Highlights
- Very original, high spec car
- Low mileage
- MOT until February 2023
The Background
First manufactured in 1969, the Range Rover Mk1 (now known as the ‘Classic’) stayed in production until 1996. Especially from the early-80s, it moved upmarket from its more utilitarian roots, becoming a genuinely capable luxury vehicle.
As such a range of engines and trim levels were offered, with the Vogue SE being one of the highest specification available.

The History
While the car doesn’t come with a history file, we do know that it is a UK vehicle, first registered in 1990. It has had 7 owners over the past 32 years and the current keeper has had it since February 2022.
The car displays a very low mileage of just over 42,000 – and while we cannot confirm this from paperwork, from the condition of the car we believe it to be accurate.
The Paperwork
The car comes with the current V5 and a MOT until February 2023.
The Interior
Range Rovers have always had great cabins - roomy, light and airy. This one is no different. The grey leather seats are in very good condition, with no rips or significant damage. There is some wear to the driver’s seat, but it is relatively minor.
Complementing the seats, the carpets are also a mid-grey, with matching door cards and dash trim. Wooden veneer trim brightens the dash and door tops and is in good condition.

Overall, the seats and dashboard are presented in good condition, with all of the switchgear intact and no trim pieces missing. Featuring electric seats and windows, as well as a more modern Kenwood CD/Radio, the cabin is tastefully specified. The owner tells us that everything works as it should.
The boot area is large, as in all Range Rovers, and has the same grey carpet as the cabin. Under the carpet, the floor looks solid and undamaged. Even the original jack and wheel brace are present and correct.
There are, however, a few things that the new owner will need to address in the cabin. First of all, the rear view mirror needs to be reattached. Also, the headlining is in a poor condition and beginning to sag (a common fault with this model), and the inner sunroof will also need to be replaced.
It is also very dirty inside and will require a deep clean and valet. Nevertheless, we have the feeling that, after a thorough cleaning, it will be a very nice interior.
The Exterior
Again, this is a very original vehicle outside. The Olive green finish to the body panels and wheels is, in our opinion, the best colour for this model of Range Rover. All of the body panels looked straight and corrosion free.
As you would expect from a vehicle of this age, there are minor scuffs, blemishes and dinks on the bodywork, but with a machine polish it would soon look every inch the luxury off-roader again.

The wheels are the original 3-spoke design, painted to match the body. They are in fair condition, but would benefit from being restored as the paint is beginning to bubble and peel on them.
Underneath, the car looks very solid and well kept, as evidenced by the long MOT. If a Range Rover of this vintage is going to fail on anything, it’s usually corrosion. But this car looks really very good across the chassis, floor-pans and drivetrain.
It’s another reason we believe the car’s displayed low mileage. It also looks as if the car has never been used for any kind of off-roading, as the underside is free from any of the wear you would usually see in a car that’s gone off-tarmac.

The Mechanics
Under the bonnet lurks Rover’s evergreen V8, here in 3.9-litre electronic fuel-injected form. The engine looks clean and tidy, with some surface corrosion on view in the engine bay, but nothing we would deem significant. It starts and runs smoothly, and idles well.
The V8 is mated to a 4-speed automatic ZF transmission, with high and low ratios. It’s a strong and popular choice, and the owner tells us that it runs smoothly and well in this car.
One of the advantages of this car is that, as a pre-1992 model, it rides on standard coil-spring suspension, rather than the complicated (and often fragile) air-suspension of the later models.
It makes the car a genuinely reliable and usable daily proposition. With disc brakes all round too, the mechanical aspects of the car are deceptively simple yet offer a vast range of abilities.

The Appeal
Everyone loves a Classic Range Rover, right? Whether you’re after a proper off-road adventure wagon, a luxurious and comfortable cruise, something to haul the family and dogs about in, or an effortless towing machine, the Range Rover covers all bases. It’s one of the few cars that can genuinely claim to be “all the car you need”.
This Vogue SE model has much to recommend it: low mileage, a great colour scheme and a high specification for the age. Yes, it needs a bit of TLC – a few bits of interior trim need to be sorted, the paint could do with a polish, and it needs a proper clean in and out.
But overall, it’s a very solid, honest car for its age. Whoever buys this will have a vehicle that, if cared for, could well be with them for life.

These Range Rover Classics are beginning to appreciate too.
