Porsche’s 944 is a rapidly appreciating modern classic, and in S2 trim it really is a superb driver’s car. Offering an engaging drivetrain and refined coupé styling, it’s easy to see why it remains popular.

- Electric windows and door mirrors
- Factory fitted removable sunroof
- Original Panasonic radio/cassette
With deeply sculpted seats and a sporting driving position, the 944’s cabin is very much focussed on the driving experience. But that’s not to say it lacks luxuries or quality. The material quality here is superb, from the upholstery to the plastics and switchgear, everything is very nicely finished with an excellent, minimalist design approach.
The seats and door cards are finished in a combination of that typically German deep blue leatherette material and lovely velour style fabric inserts that feature a white pinstripe design. It’s all in very good order, with no evidence of wear, no tears and no damage. We’ve seen cars with 10,000 miles on the clock showing significantly more wear - clearly this cabin has been very well cared for.
Complementing the upholstery, the carpets are a smart blue-grey colour with deep blue original Porsche over-mats. Again, everything is in remarkably fine condition, presenting so well it’s difficult to believe that this is a 32 year old car.
The same story continues across the dashboard, instrument binnacle and driving controls. There are very slight signs of age and wear, but they’re almost beyond notice, so well preserved is the interior.
At the rear, the luggage area is trimmed in carpet to match the main cabin, and underneath there is the original spacesaver spare wheel, Porsche pump and toolkit. Present and correct is the original leatherette bag to house the removable sunroof, and the factory-fitted retractable load cover is there and in an excellent state.
The Exterior
- Original Crystal Silver Metallic paintwork
- Original 16” Design 90 alloy wheels
- Vehicle comes with both indoor, and outdoor covers
The S2 has always been a very smart looking car. Porsche got the basic proportions and styling absolutely spot-on with the 944, and the S2 featuring further enhancements, including the smooth front bumper and rear valance from the Turbo model and those classic Design 90 cast alloys.
These alloys perfectly suit the car and we’re so glad they have been retained and not replaced with aftermarket items. Presented here in very good condition, other than a slight mark on one of the wheels, they are shod in new Bridgestone tyres and set the look of the car off perfectly.
This example is finished in shimmering Crystal Silver Metallic paint, which is largely original and presents very well. There is naturally the odd minor blemish, but nothing that is really worth noting. Due to some stone chipping and lacquer peel at the front, the vendor has had the front end professionally resprayed and blended into the original paint. Clearly the work has been completed to a very high standard as the finish looks superb.
In similar fashion, the bodywork itself looks straight and tidy, with nice even panel gaps and absolutely no sign of damage or corrosion. The same can be said for all of the trim, badging and lenses, which appear to be spot on.
Underneath, things continue in the same vein, with all the floor pans, sills and drivetrain elements we could see looking to be clean, straight, undamaged and free from conspicuous corrosion.
The Mechanics
- 2,969cc 4-cylinder DOHC 16v
- 5-speed manual transmission
- Full service history
- Excellent MOT history
- Cameron Sports Cars have completed a mechanical car check on 31/08/22.
Blessed with what was, at one time, the world’s largest capacity 4-cylinder production engine, the 944 S2 has a brilliantly engaging drivetrain. Mounted transversely, that big naturally aspirated four-pot pushes more than 200bhp to the rear wheels through a manual transmission.
Lifting the bonnet, the engine bay is very clean and tidy, with no evidence of leaks, over-heating or damage that we could observe.
We’re assured by the owner that the car drives just as it should. In fact, they tell us that it’s in “showroom condition”, accelerating, stopping and handling almost like a new car. They report that there are no mechanical issues they are aware of.
As we mentioned previously, the car has sailed through every MOT since 2013, with not even an advisory to trouble the owner. Add this to the full service history and the fact that, for the last 8 years it’s been cared for by a renowned Porsche specialist, and you can clearly see that this is something special. One of the jobs that the owner had carried out early in their custodianship was to have the cambelt changed. With that kind of record, you can be sure that it’s in exceptionally good mechanical order.
Summary
This 944 S2 is a really good example and well maintained and presented by the owner.
Long the unsung hero of the Porsche range, the 944 is rapidly developing a loyal following, and values are climbing. We’re only surprised it hasn’t happened sooner, the 944 is a great looking car, especially in S2 specification, and offers a great driving experience.

This example is as well maintained as any we’ve seen, obviously it’s been cherished by its owners and had care lavished upon it. It’s paid off too – we think this is one of the nicest, most original examples you’ll find anywhere. The specification is perfect, the presentation immaculate and the history impeccable. What more could anyone possibly want?
