1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet (964)

Highlights

  • Substantial paperwork, old tax discs and original tool kit
  • Beautifully kept inside and out
  • Mechanically sound underneath
  • Very comprehensive service history recorded in the original service book

The Appeal

The 1990 Porsche Carrera 4 Cabriolet is a true testament to the craftsmanship and engineering prowess of the Porsche brand. With its sleek and timeless design, it stands as a symbol of automotive excellence. The convertible top allows for the perfect balance of open-air driving pleasure and the security of a well-insulated cabin during usual British elements.

Under the hood, this Carrera 4 boasts a classic Porsche sounding 3.6-liter flat-six engine, delivering an exhilarating 247 horsepower. The power is seamlessly transferred to all four wheels, offering exceptional traction and handling, even in adverse weather conditions. This unique feature sets it apart from its rear-wheel-drive counterparts, making it an ideal companion for any driving enthusiast especially in the wet.

This fine example boasts huge originality throughout with no evident modifications, excellent paintwork all round and a huge history file that documents the cars history overseas as well as a substantial service record.

The History and Paperwork

  • Car purchased in 1990 on the Isle of Man from Ian Corkhill
  • Includes 30 service stamps, indicating regular maintenance and care
  • Vendor informs us the screen wash system has started to go intermittent, the vendor uses the secondary high intensity system operated from the dashboard until the car is in for other work. This is due to the main system requiring the front right wheel arch cover removing to get access to it.
Extensive collection of historic paperwork, providing a detailed record of the car's past Bursting with significant amounts of paperwork, this 911 has a very complete history and record of care throughout its life both in the UK and the Isle of Man.

First registered by Ian Corkhill on the Isle Of Man, this car has benefited from very thorough care and scheduled maintenance as can be seen with a flick through the well stamped, original service booklet and although not complete, it is reassuringly regular.

Many of the service receipts have also been retained that back up the cars history and provide a more in-depth insight on work that has been carried out which also includes a Porsche immobiliser system and a new clutch.
Paperwork that proves export from the Isle Of Man has also been retained for provenance as well as all the original handbooks that are protected by the leather Porsche wallet. Two keys along with two immobiliser fobs are also included.

The Interior

  • All totally untouched and original with wear commensurate of the mileage
  • Very clean throughout with nicely kept, cream leather

Having clearly been loved all its life, this cabriolet has maintained an excellent and original finish throughout with little significant wear to note.

Even in 1990, this model came with electric windows and electronically adjustable seating…very nice! But let’s be honest, these cars are not about gadgets are they? The driving experience therefore is enhanced with very sporty seats which retain great shape and colour and very little in the way of cracking or wear with just a few minor isolated areas that could be cleaned and treated as necessary.

The simplest steering wheel is all you need with no distracting buttons but is simply leather wrapped and sits neatly in front of those classic, immediately recognisable and clear dials that Porsche lovers know so well with bright white numerals and vivid orange needles. Original cream carpets clad the interior floor and lower door cards with very little wear or discoloration due to the original cream mats and black over-mats being retained for the last 33 years, all of which are tidy and show minimal wear.

Across the dashboard all is well, the dials are clear and undamaged, the knobs and switches that are of clear and easy legibility still retain a nice matte factory finish and a very fitting, aftermarket CD player has been put in place of the original audio unit.

The rear seats as one can expect are in excellent order and show virtually no sign of wear to see, the same too for the ‘frunk’ or boot area that holds the space saver spare wheel and battery and retains a nice dark carpet that is in great condition.

The Exterior

  • Excellent overall condition and presented in Guards Red
  • Stock 16 inch wheel that are in superb order
  • Cabriolet top in good condition
  • Presented in the most popular colour Guards Red, this 911 retains a superbly authentic, original look and feel, testament to the care of its previous keepers.
  • The vendor did inform us of the minor defects the car has accrued over the years, these being: – Very small slight dent under driver door handle
  • Very small slight dent on bonnet in the middle 6 inches from screen
  • Slight dent on the passenger door below the wing mirror
  • Some bubbling on scuttle plate by the screen on passenger side

There is also a minor crack on the rear plastic Porsche lens and a slight defect on the cabrio roof seam, all ultimately very minor given the age of the vehicle and many of these things we are assured could be remedied with ease.

Generally, though, the exterior is excellent with many of the more delicate areas not showing significant signs of ageing or having defects. The Stuttgart gold badge that stands out so well against the Guards Red paint is crisp and clear with excellent colour and the model badge on the rear hatch is very good too.

From front to rear all the lights are excellent, the fronts appear to be original units and have no evidence of moisture ingress and the rear lamps too are of similar calibre. To finish things off, the original wheels are in superb nick, painted bright silver, and have

likely been refurbished at some point and have no evidence of damage whatsoever, only the centre caps that have the Porsche badge have suffered some ageing and would benefit from replacement to compliment the wheels.

The Mechanics

  • Very original and unmolested example
  • Premium tyres with good tread
  • 3.6 Litre flat six producing the iconic Porsche soundtrack

As with the rest of the vehicle, the mechanics of this car have not been overlooked and benefiting from an excellent service routine the car is in fine fettle.

Under the engine cover all looks well, nothing has been altered or modified that we could see and the general appearance is clean but not too clean either.

All the hoses, cables, linkages and belts appear in good order with genuine Porsche belts fitted to the cooling system and lots of original stickers remaining from the factory.

A look through the stunning 16 inch wheels shows nice clean callipers, painted black and in good order with some light lacquer peel. The brake rotors themselves are in good order and show little wear or corrosion, likely not seeing too many miles since being fitted.

Underneath the car appears extremely solid and original. The super flat floor pan retains the usual rough finished stone guard as would have been from the factory along with well fitted sill covers and arch linings.
Under the engine everything appears dry and original that we can see, the standard exhaust that emphasises that iconic note so well remains and shows little evidence of significant corrosion being predominantly of high grade steel and finished with a single outlet.

The general appearance is corrosion free and extremely confidence inspiring as to the way this car has been maintained and treated throughout its life.

Summary

Mechanically sound and charmingly original, there are few cars as iconic as a 90’s 911 cabriolet in Guards Red.
Overall in absolutely superb condition but not so perfect you won't want to use the car regularly so this is the perfect opportunity to obtain an extremely solid and very desirable example of the appreciating modern classic Porsche market that can be a readily used companion.
