1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet (964)

Highlights

  • Rare manual example
  • Excellent history
  • Early 964 Carrera 2 model

The Appeal

Long regarded as the high-point of the air-cooled 911 range, the 964 is a very desirable and collectible machine, offering a retro, air-cooled driving experience with more refined and modern dynamics.
Here we have a Carrera 2 Cabriolet which benefits from a truly excellent service history and a near perfect specification to complement that wonderful reputation.

If you’ve been looking for a 964 Cabriolet,  this simply must be on your shortlist.

The Interior

  • Navy blue leather upholstery
  • Electrically adjustable seats
  • Electric windows and door mirrors
  • Air-conditioning
  • New Blaupunkt Bremen sound system

Nobody does interiors quite like the Germans, which is evident in this lovely period cabriolet.

The original navy blue leather seats are finished with contrasting white piping and look in largely good condition, with some light wear evident as you’d expect in a 32 year old car.
Looking at the driver’s seats, there is the usual wear to the outer bolster, with some minor splitting to the leather and piping. The only other issue with the seats is that the recline and forward/backward adjustment on the passenger seat has to be done manually, as the electric function on this seat is not functioning.

The occasional rear seats are in very fine condition and perfect for children, or as a little extra luggage space. Likewise the door cards present very well, with no notable wear or damage to their upholstery or trim.
The blue-grey carpet of the cabin works very well with the deep blue leather and is presented in good condition, with new genuine Porsche over-mats in a complementary shade of navy blue.
With a nicely designed and simple dash layout, the 964 feels classically timeless and elegant from the driver’s seat. Everything appears to be original and in a good state, with no trim missing or broken.

We noted a little clouding to the clear plastic of the oil and fuel gauges, but it does not affect their usability.

The owner has added a modern Blaupunkt Bremen stereo system, which has smart period styling but offers many modern functions including: DAB, USB, SD card reading, Bluetooth connectivity (including hands-free) and an Aux connection. We’re told by the owner that all of the car’s switchgear and controls operate as they should, with no faults to report.
At the front, the luggage area is nicely trimmed and presented in fine condition, with  a space-saver spare wheel, first aid kit and toolkit present and correct.

The Exterior

  • Classic Grand Prix White paintwork
  • 17” Cup 1 alloy wheels (recently refurbished)
  • New front windscreen
  • Fabric roof with matching tonneau

Few cars suit white as well as a 911 - this excellent Grand Prix White paintwork really does show off the car’s proportions and styling very well.

With the roof offering a smart contrast to the white paint, and looking to be in excellent condition with no wear, UV damage or tears we could see, it makes for a very handsome vehicle indeed.
Looking at the paint and bodywork, it’s clearly been very well cared for and lovingly maintained. The paint looks glossy, nicely finished and all of the bodywork appears straight and undamaged.

There is certainly no evidence of corrosion we observed. Even the door shuts and arches – known failure points on the 911 – present superbly well. The owner notes that there are a few stone chips on the bonnet, and one or two minor blemishes on the bodywork and external trim, but nothing that should be of concern.
Some work has been carried out externally, with fresh paint having been applied to the bonnet and wings to keep them looking their best. The car also features the tear drop mirrors and the Cup 1 alloy wheels, which have been recently refurbished and so look very well indeed. They’re shod with brand new Pirelli P Zero Nero tyres, which we’re told have covered less than 1,000 miles.
The wide rear spoiler, which rises at 50mph, operates as it should, and adds a dash of sporting intent to the styling.
Underneath, the car looks very clean indeed, with no notable damage or corrosion we could see. There were the usual scrapes to the undertrays, but nothing that would worry us.

The Mechanics

  • 3.6-litre flat-six, air-cooled engine
  • 5-speed manual transmission

Few drivetrains are as evocative or melodious as an air-cooled flat-six.

It’s an instantly recognisable sound with echoes of Porsche’s vast motorsport heritage.

Presented here in 3.6-litre form, twinned with a manual transmission (a rare option for the cabriolet) alongside the rear-wheel drive platform of the Carrera 2, it makes for an engaging and extremely desirable driving experience.
Other features of the 964 generation were ABS, power steering, coils and springs all round and an all-aluminium, dry-sumped engine.
With a full dealer and specialist service history, the owner tells us that the car performs brilliantly, with no mechanical issues and fine driving manners.

They report that the car accelerates and handles just as it should, with no smoke, leaks or unwanted noises.

Summary

If you're going to experience one Porsche 911 in your life, it should definitely be the 964.

With a classic air-cooled drivetrain and some extremely fine engineering, it’s everything it’s reputed to be and then some.
This example comes in highly sought-after manual Carrera 2 specification, with a brilliant service history and lovely white-over-navy colour scheme. Add in that cabriolet roof and you have all the sports car you could ever need.

As a way to enjoy a classic sports car feel without having to make many compromises, this is difficult to beat.
