The Appeal

Not many cars can carry eight people. These days you're limited to a small selection of eye-wateringly expensive vans. Not even a Range Rover can manage it. And yet, Peugeot seated eight quite comfortable in an estate of all things! Très bien.

The simply brilliant 505 GTI Family is a reminder of just how good Peugeot used to be. It hails from an era when French car manufacturers in particular were at the top of their game, packing all their immense know-how and gallic esotericism into a selection of sublime family cars. There was the Citroën CX, Renault Espace, and from Peugeot, our 505 GTI Family. Or should we say "Families"? As dear reader, we're offering not one, but two of these ultra-rare super estates...

Let's start with the main event. This silver 1990 example has had just two former keepers and was looked after by a Peugeot main dealer for the first two years of its life and then by a marque specialist until parked in 2012. It was a much-loved family bus and its present faded grandeur shows this is a car that's only recently fallen upon hard times. The vendor's husband purchased it as a restoration project, along with the maroon donor car and haul of rare parts, but unfortunately, they haven't been able to do it.

The silver 505 was running and driving until last year, occasionally exercised around the storage compound, but now, alas, it no longer starts. The second car is clearly a little worse for wear in comparison, but is sure to have a great many usable (and very rare parts) or could well be the basis for a second project.

For those seeking. a rare, interesting and simply brilliant classic to restore, this is a superb opportunity.

History and Paperwork

  • UK market RHD car from 1990
  • Little is known of the donor car's history as it was purchased as for its parts
  • Last MOT expired in 2012
  • We understand that the car came off the road for some corrosion issues
  • Previously owned by 2 registered keepers who used it while raising their children
  • Serviced by a main dealer for the first 2 years, then by a Peugeot Specialist garage until 2012
  • Taken off the road in 2012 for welding work and restoration, which was not completed due to ill health
  • Purchased as a project with most parts for restoration and a donor 505
  • Ran well and serviced until 2011
  • Moved around the compound and kept running until last year

The Condition

  • The interior is very well-preserved, looks complete and eminently salvageable
  • The cloth upholstery does not look to be excessively worn overall
  • All rear seats fold as expected, revealing a huge load area
  • Electric windows and central locking
  • Aftermarket Radio/CD player
  • All seats in great condition with no notable sagging
  • Paintwork in fair condition with a few marks, scuffs and some fading
  • The bodywork looks to be quite straight and solid overall
  • The vinyls are missing and some of the trim is a little damaged
  • The alloy wheels and brightwork present well
  • We understand that there is some corrosion inside the engine compartment
  • The underside shows some signs of corrosion but looks in fair order for a vehicle of its age that's been off the road for some years
  • The maroon donor car exhibits more serious signs of corrosion and general deterioration

The Mechanics

  • 2,165 cc Douvrin l4 with fuel injection
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Large selection of parts included besides the donor vehicle
  • Vehicle does not start at present, although reportedly ran and drove last year
