The Appeal
The Peugeot 205 is an icon. That’s not hyperbole, simply a fact – its cultural significance is colossal. This is the car that mobilised 1980s France with its rugged simplicity, dependability and affordability. And on the other side of the coin, the sporting variants rewrote the fast car rulebook, the Rallye and GTI models offering scintillating performance combined with outstanding practicality.
The car we have here wears both of those hats perfectly. It started life as a lowly 1.0-litre XE, a basic spec, and it lived a gentle and unstressed existence. It’s always been kept garaged, as you can see by the fact that the dash is uncracked and the body is untroubled by corrosion. The 50,000 miles on the clock is genuine, and the condition of the car bears this out.
…but there’s a twist. In 2021, the car was bought by a lifelong petrolhead who, following the mantra that one must always start a project with the best possible base, formulated a new direction for this plucky little Peugeot.
He commissioned the renowned marque experts Pug1Off to give it a proper makeover, which included fitting the engine and gearbox from a 106 GTI, the front brakes from a 206 GTI, coilover suspension, Sparco seats and various other tweaks. All-in, he’s spent over £12,000, and the results are frankly magnificent. Trust us, we drove it. And it was so much fun, we found it very hard to stop driving it.
So why sell? Simply because it’s not getting used – with a variety of other cars on the driveway, this is the one that sadly has to make way for other vehicles. But his loss is your gain, as the next owner of this wonderful 205 is guaranteed to have a whole heap of fun with it…

The Interior
- Original trim in superb condition
- New Sparco recliners
- Digital rev counter
It’s evident throughout the interior that this is a low-mileage example which has been looked after and hasn’t had a hard life. All of the original bits are in superb condition – the dash, the doorcards, the carpets, the headlining, the parcel shelf, it’s all minty-fresh.
The front seats have been replaced with a set of new Sparco R333 recliners (which tilt to allow access to the super-tidy rear bench) on custom rails, and an aftermarket CD head unit has been fitted, although the original radio is included if you wish to refit it.
A digital rev counter has been installed to keep an eye on that rev-hungry engine and sits neatly in the dash binnacle, and USB inputs have been cunningly hidden inside the dash ashtray.

The Exterior
- Original XE trim
- 1.6 GTI alloys with Continental tyres
- Impressively solid and corrosion-free on top and underneath
We love the approach that has been taken with this car, as it would have been so easy to turn it into just another GTI replica. Instead, the owner has opted to keep things simple. It’s not exactly a sleeper, as there are some giveaways to the trained eye that immediately suggest something fruity’s going on (the GTI wheels, the larger exhaust, the Sparco seats peeping through the windows)… but with such staggering originality of the XE spec, it was a no-brainer to keep it all as it was.
Aside from one or two minor scuffs, the bumpers are in good order, and the light lenses and window glass are all good. Heck, it’s even got the original dealer sticker in the back window. And just look at the condition of the arches, the window seals, the sills – this is one seriously solid 205, we haven’t seen an unrestored one this tidy in a long time.

The Mechanicals
- Full professional conversion to 106 GTI engine and gearbox
- 206 GTI brake upgrade
- Stance+ coilovers
The running gear is this car’s party piece. Anyone who’s into retro Peugeots will know the name Pug1Off, as they’re the established go-to experts when it comes to tuning, modifying and maintaining these cars, and the drivetrain swap in this car has been carried out impeccably.
The 106 GTI engine is in very fine fettle; blip the immobiliser fob, twist the key in the ignition and it fires up instantly, settling into a nice even idle. It hunts for revs a little when cold, but a throttle blip keeps it happy. The engine feels strong, pulling eagerly through the rev range, and the gearbox shifts very slickly.
The 206 GTI brake upgrade is an ideal accompaniment to the power increase, pulling the car up straight and true in a very reassuring fashion. And the suspension has been upgraded with Stance+ coilovers at the front and dampers at the rear (because, of course, these cars have a torsion beam rear); it’s all height-adjustable, and the ride is superb – firm, but not uncomfortable, and just as happy carving up country lanes as it is cresting speedbumps.
In short, this is an absolutely wonderful car to drive. Outstanding performance, with reliability baked into the formula.

Summary
This car offers so much. The way it drives is sublime, not just in terms of the readily available power, hilarious acceleration and rorty soundtrack, but also for the divine handling. It’s been beautifully built by people who really know what they’re doing, and the fact that the base car for the project was so tidy and original has paid dividends in the finished product.
Don’t call it a sleeper, call it a restomod. A really good one. Someone’s going to have a lot of fun with this.
