1990 Morgan 4/4 1600 2-Seater

Highlights

  • Dry stored
  • Convertible hood in excellent condition
  • Mechanically sound and well-running vehicle
  • Vintage styling, but made in the ‘90s

The Appeal

With its roots in the original design from 1936, the original 4/4 was Morgan's first car with four wheels.

The name 4/4 indicating that the model has four wheels and four cylinders. Earlier Morgans had been three-wheelers, typically with V-twin engines.
This one in particular is a great example of how well these cars stand the test of time. With original styling from a period long gone, this car is only 32 years young, and still shines like it did in 1990.

The 4/4 gives the owner a chance to experience the old-time 1930s motoring design styling, without the worry that is associated with owning a car that is 90 years old.

The History and Paperwork

  • Up to date service book with dates and stamps
  • MOT history with no significant advisories
  • Service and maintenance history with invoices present
This Morgan is on its third owner, with a full service history in the log book, dating back to the beginning of the car’s life.

According to the owner, the vehicle is an original UK car which was acquired in 2017. Since then, the current owner has driven the car less than 1,000 miles.

The reason for sale is simply due to having other projects to complete, otherwise the vehicle would have been kept and enjoyed.
Just a quick look at the MOT history also shows that it has been kept up, but not driven very much, in the last few years. There are no advisories present in recent years, other than a suspected cracking of the tires, which we were not able to find evidence of when inspecting the vehicle.

The Interior

  • Beige interior, perfect colour combination to the red paint
  • Overall condition is better than expected for its age
  • Retro-style interior, but with modern materials and finishes
The beige coloured interior perfectly suits the paint job and chrome.

While there are some scuffs right above the steering wheel, the interior is in overall nearly-new condition. It’s very clear that the vehicle has been dry stored and cared for, as the soft bits are in great condition and show no signs of sun-fading.
There is a certain elegance in its presentation; simple and very functional, clearly to-the-point and with usability and practicality in mind.

Everything is placed within easy reach, all of the dials work, and it all feels solid and unbreakable. The Walnut steering wheel harks back to an older era with its wood grain and polished finish. The owner states the electronics are all in working order.
While there is no boot on the vehicle, there is a storage space behind the two seats. This area has been modified by the current owner to allow for additional room for the driver.

This is a common modification for these cars and has been carried out by a professional Morgan specialist. See photos of the cut-out behind the driver’s seat.
The 4/4 also comes with a soft top, which is in above average condition, as well as a tonneau cover for when the top is down. Other notable factory extras include uprated rear view mirror and seat sliders.

The Exterior

  • Excellent condition paintwork and brightwork
  • Bold red paintwork – perfectly suits the elegance of the vehicle shape
  • Convertible top in excellent condition
This outside of the Morgan is just as good as the inside.

The stunning bright red paint and sparkling chrome-work really reinforce the fact that this car is a true roadster with sportscar blood. Paintwork is all in order, other than a small dent in the hood, noted in the photos.

Additionally, the chrome brightwork is shining like new in most places, however, there are some areas where it has begun to pit; notably the spare tyre carrier on the rear, as well as the engine bay release handles. These bits mentioned do not at all detract from the overall beauty of this 4/4.
The convertible top is in good condition, with some age-related marks, but no tears or holes evident. The rear plastic window on the top is not faded or sun damaged but does show some signs of use.

The connecting buttons, convertible mechanics, and overall operation of the top all perform flawlessly and with ease.
The top-half doors and side windows are present and in near perfect condition. They also come on and off with ease, making this convertible top very easy to put up and down when desired.
The wheels are in great visual condition, with some curb rash, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance of the Morgan.

The Mechanics

  • Absolutely flies through MOTs
  • 1597cc Ford CVH engine
  • 5-speed model
  • Owner states it runs perfectly and shifts smoothly
The engine bay shows very little signs of aging. It has been cared for over the years, and as such is said to be in a ready and reliable state.

The original hammer and lug breaker are present in the engine bay storage compartment and in great condition. The jack is also bolted in place.
Suspension, steering, and pickup are all as good or better than to be expected for a car of this age. The car runs straight and does exactly what it’s told. There are no unexpected quirks to quarrel with and the ride reinforces its vintage sportscar roots.
The car still has plenty of pickup with its 1.6L four cylinder engine. The vehicle is so light that a smaller powertrain is more than sufficient.
The roof comes down quickly and with hardly any effort, meaning that it can be used as often as desired without any hassle. There is also a top tensioner to make sure the hood is pulled tight and any marks from the fold are stretched flat.

Summary

This Morgan is ready to be driven. The owner states it as being an excellent “usable, authentic car” which is a perfect example of the essence a more modern Morgan should exude.

When the sun comes out, what could be better than feeling the exhilaration and sense of freedom that only a chromed-up convertible classic can provide.

That, coupled with vintage styling of the Morgan, really brings you back to a place that hasn’t existed for a good 90 years.

Being completely ready to roll, this is a great chance to pick up a well-maintained, mechanically sound example of a tried-and-true classic Morgan.
