The result of a collaboration between Steyr, Daimler and Puch, the civil version of the Geländewagen was presented in 1979, after being developed for six years and tested under all conditions.

Designed as a military vehicle at the request of the Shah of Persia, who wished to equip his army with a Mercedes off-road vehicle, the first Geländewagen W460 featured an unmistakable design, a sturdy separate chassis and three fully lockable differentials. The available engines were a 2.3-litre petrol four-cylinder, a 2.4-litre diesel four-cylinder and a diesel five-cylinder, to which the powerful 150 hp straight-six of the 280 GE was added from 1980, which was able to show its prowess by winning the 1983 Paris-Dakar, driven by Jacky Ickx.

Unstoppable and designed to tackle difficult routes, the original G-Class was adopted by the armed forces of many countries and will continue to be produced until 2025 as a support vehicle for NATO.

Introduced at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, the new W463 G-Class offered a more luxurious and comfortable interior and numerous cosmetic and mechanical improvements to meet the great demand for a better-equipped and more pleasant-to-drive Geländewagen, without losing its much-appreciated off-road qualities.
