1990 Kawasaki GPX 600R

Highlights

  • Unrestored, original example
  • On-the-button, ready to use and enjoy
  • Fantastic graphics and 80s styling

The Appeal

Introduced in 1988, the Kawasaki GPX 600R was a development on the GPZ 600R, featuring upgrades such as a double-cradle frame, Kawasaki’s Electronic Suspension Control System anti-dive software, and improved power output, with 84bhp from its four-stroke, inline-four twin-cam engine.
This particular example remains - to the best of the vendor’s knowledge - entirely original save for an upgraded exhaust, and has never been knowingly restored, making this a fantastic (and rare) opportunity to obtain a GPX 600R that has not been molested or modified.

History/Paperwork

  • V5 registered keepers document, showing 14 former keepers
  • Significant expenditure in recent years, documented and invoiced
  • Minor fettling and rebuilding whilst in the current ownership
  • Ready to ride and enjoy
First registered in January 1990, this particular GPX 600R came to the vendor in November 2021, having previously been partially stripped for maintenance by the previous keeper.
The vendor - an experienced motorcycle enthusiast and certified petrolhead - then set about re-building the remainder of the bike, including bleeding the brakes and re-assembling any remaining parts using new fixtures, fittings, parts and gaskets, utilising OE/genuine parts wherever possible.
In total, over £1,000 has been spent bringing this Kawasaki back to road-worthy conditions, with all consumable items (battery, oil/filter, brake fluid, chain, brake discs/pads/pistons/seals/lines, chain sprocket, suspension fluid, etc) having been replaced by the vendor for peace-of-mind.
Other than the non-OE (but period-correct) exhaust, the vendor states that to the best of his knowledge the bike is unrestored and as Kawasaki intended, wearing its original fenders.
Included with the bike is an extensive folder of invoices for all parts and miscellaneous items purchased whilst the vehicle is in the vendor’s care, the V5 and one set of keys, along with numerous MoT certificates and miscellaneous documents.

The Interior

  • Seat has some slight wear
  • All systems working
The seat on this Kawasaki shows some slight scuffs/wear on the outer offside edge where the rider’s leg would be.
Elsewhere, there are some marks on the handlebars, grips and clutch/brake levers, though these are commensurate for the bike’s age and indicated mileage.
The vendor reports no known faults with any of the levers, switches or gauges.

The Exterior

  • Good overall condition
  • Crisp graphics
  • Excellent paintwork
In spite of its age, this never-knowingly-restored example of the GPX presents very well indeed, showcasing crisp graphics, vibrant paintwork and no sign of any impact damage that we can see to the main fairing, suggesting it hasn’t been dropped or involved in an accident.
The rear tail piece does show a small crack, however (on the nearside edge) whilst the paintwork around the fuel tank, lower edges of the fairing and the windshield shows what would be considered commensurate usage wear, though there is only one particularly noticeable mark, visible on the offside edge of the fuel tank, depicted in the gallery below.
Both wheels are in great condition, with new tyres having been fitted during the last year, and only used a handful of times since.
The mirror casings exhibit some slight scratches and blemishes on the front side, but nothing major, and the mirror glass itself remains undamaged on both sides.

The Mechanicals

  • 592cc twin-cam inline-four engine
  • On-the-button, runs very well
  • All consumables replaced/major service carried out in current ownership
Between the frames, the 592cc engine is largely hidden from view, though - from what we could see - there were no sings of any leaks, nor any untoward behaviours exhibited by the engine, drivetrain or mechanical systems during our photo shoot.
The vendor reports there is a slight ‘chatter’ from the clutch on idle, though this is a character exhibited by all GPX’ and, once a gear is engaged, disappears completely. Other than this, there are no reported quirks or faults.
The period-correct exhaust is the only known deviation from factory specification on the bike.
Whilst there is not a current MoT certificate for the bike, the vendor has stated it will be tested and a fresh MoT provided prior to completion of the sale.

Summary

Unmolested, unmodified and unrestored, this is a rare opportunity to obtain a 1990 GPX 600R in almost-factory specification. Benefitting from significant recent investment and mechanical overhaul, this is a bike that is ready to be ridden off into the sunset, given a full restoration or simply added to any considerate collection.
Whatever your intentions, be sure not to miss this.
