The Appeal

Finding a low-mileage classic can be something of a double-edged sword. Yes, there is the excitement that comes with finding something original, but on the flip side, cars are machines and they need to be used. This 1990 Jaguar XJ6 is perhaps, then, the perfect storm. It’s got a mere 25k on the clock, but it has been used regularly - if sparingly - over the course of its life.
No long periods laid up, it’s been kept circulating, it’s been kept in the best of health, and it’s been maintained in a fashion akin to a car with 100k more miles. This car is, make no mistake, as close as you’re going to get to finding a brand new one without the aid of a time machine. It’s remarkable.
Owned by a small number of keen, passionate enthusiasts over the years, this XJ6 has wanted for nothing. Everything works, everything is as it should be and as such, this has to be one of the best on the market. Miss it and you truly will miss out.

The History and Paperwork

  • FULL history; every MOT, invoice and service stamp
  • Two keys, full set of original book packs
  • Just three previous owners
  • Maintained to an incredibly high standard
  • MOT until August 2023 (no advisories)
Ample, and detailed. Firstly, you have the original Jaguar book pack with the obligatory handbook, the manuals and even the supplying dealer’s business card! Then there’s the service book, stamped up to 2019, it shows that this XJ6 was serviced no matter the low miles covered that year. 2018, it was at 24,326 miles. In 2019, it was serviced again at 24,551 miles. Brilliant.
Accompanying the book pack, we have the ring folder in which we find every MOT the car has had over the years, including the recent advisory free MOT that runs until August 2023. There are also invoices for services, for repairs like new brake hoses, brake calipers, coolant changes, new bushes and a recent new fuel pump. This car, as we said earlier, has wanted for nothing.

The Interior

  • Completely original Parchment/Rattan trim
  • No wear to drivers seat or other leather
  • Every switch and function works as it should
  • Factory stereo is even still in place
Slide into the cabin and you’re instantly transported back. This Jaguar is original throughout, and as such it serves as a welcoming time machine. You’ll even need to dust off your music cassettes - no CD or DAB here. The leather is all superb, with no wear to be seen at all. The rear seats, to use the old adage, don’t look like they’ve ever seen a bottom. The carpet is excellent, though there is a bit of marking in the driver’s footwell, but nothing to be concerned by.
The dash is bright and clear, all the dials and readouts function as they should, and every button activates its corresponding function. There are no warning lights present, and with the door shut, the cabin is the intimate, comfortable space you would expect from a Jaguar of this vintage.
Of course, it’s still an old car, so there are some small things to be aware of. In true ‘British car’ fashion, the headlining is coming away ever so in the rear. Not too bad and in warmer in-cabin temperatures, it tightens up quite well, but something to address in the future. The offside rear door can be slow to activate its central locking, but it does function. Finally, the rubber weather seal is worn down on the driver kick plate - as you can see in the pictures. That’s all though. There are three year-old cars with worse issues.

The Exterior

  • Beautiful Alpine Green metallic
  • Original pressed hubcaps and correct metric wheels
  • Bright, non-pitted chrome
As you can see from poring over the many pictures, this Jaguar XJ6 is in excellent visual condition. It’s had the odd nip and tuck over the years, with some paint on the bonnet and some fresh colour and clear to further protect the sills, but that’s about it. And it’s all been done to a good standard, too.
Look down the flanks of the car, and you’re rewarded with a vista of arrow-straight panels and uniform gaps throughout. With the exception of a small patch in the rear slam panel, there is no corrosion to be seen anywhere. There is also a small imperfection on the top edge of the nearside front wing (picture) and a very minor ripple on the boot, but that’s all we could see. It’s a remarkably clean machine, which is doubly impressive given the XJ6 can often succumb to corrosion. No concerns here, though. That’s 25,000 miles and a life in warm, dry garages for you.
The chrome is all polished and gleams as keenly as it did thirty-two years ago. The bumpers are excellent, the seals around the windows and the glass itself is all excellent. There is some slight delamination in the nearside lower corner of the screen, but it’s a ‘lean in and look for it’ affair.
The XJ6 rides on the original metric steel wheels with original press spoke trims. The tyres, it should be noted, have some age to them (2009). However, they are still supple and free of cracks thanks to the car’s indoor life. And it should be noted, the recent MOT was passed with zero advisories. The current owner was going to swap to alloys, but has elected for originality in the face of the car being sold.

The Mechanics

  • Just 24,698 miles on the clock
  • Flawless drive - no bumps or rattles
  • Engine regularly serviced despite low use
You simply won’t find - at least not with any degree of ease - another this good. It starts on the button, it revs cleanly, it holds temp and just runs like a champ. This where that low mileage combined with sparing but regular use comes into play. Everything is supple and flexible, everything works, because everything has been kept working. This XJ6 drives like a new one, it truly does. The straight-six is powerful, responsive and agile. The transmission is as smooth as silk, the suspension is supple and comfortable and the brakes keep everything in control. It’s glorious.
And what about the electrics? This is an old Jaguar, after all. Everything, and we do mean everything, works as it should. The lights have been treated to replacement control modules so all headlight functions operate as they should. The interior has had every function checked and tested and there’s a new fuel pump. It’s all excellent. The current owner is a passionate pursuer of perfection, and it shows.

Summary

This car is a remarkable find, make no mistake. The current owner is only entertaining selling as he has a collection of classics, and a bit of space back would be nice. But he’s not going to be upset if you don’t buy it. But that’s moot, as you will buy it, won’t you? Look at it. It’s glorious.

Though you’re probably already sold on the pictures alone. We know we are. This is a ‘once in a lifetime’ kind of car, and one that will only go on to be more and more sought after should you look after it as it has been for the last three decades.
