Highlights
- A rare example of the “All Blue,” SE500 or 1.6i XR Super Cab MKIV Escort Cabriolet
- In a highly original looking condition and exhibiting all the special edition hallmarks
- Currently located in Sweden but lending itself to a number of left-hand drive territories
The Appeal
The MKIV Ford Escort hit the showrooms in March 1986 as a lightly modified version of the MKIII car. Despite being marketed as a new model, Ford considered it really a facelifted MKIII and codenamed it “Erika 86” in tribute to the MKIII’s Erika codename. Of course, there was a Cabriolet version in the range with the XR3i Cabriolet sitting at the top of the tree. As the MKIV Escort reached the end of its production life, a number of special “run-out” editions were launched. In the case of the Cabriolet the ”SE500,” known in some territories such as Sweden as the 1.6i XR Super Cab, was the range topper.
This example of the range topping run out Cabriolet was based on the XR3i Cabriolet and so inherited the peppy 1.6i fuel injected engine and sports orientated underpinnings. This example appears very original indeed and all the key special edition attributes seem present and correct. This was a low volume model with probably a few more than 500 produced but likely under 1,000. A rare survivor car, then, and one for the purist and enthusiast alike.

Summary
Anyone with an interest in cars will have noted the increasing demand for Fords, especially the faster ones from the late eighties and early nineties. Ford, in Europe at least, were exponents of the special edition at around this time, often giving outgoing models a boost with lots of extras and limited production specifications. These cars were usually produced in miniscule numbers by Ford standards so have become often the most sought after of all.
This example ticks all those desirability boxes. It’s a fast Ford with XR3i mechanicals and it is a highly specified and fully loaded special edition, too. With all those extra goodies defining the model, originality is key. This car ticks that box, too. With all this in mind this special edition Escort surely represents an exciting ownership prospect for Ford enthusiasts far and wide.
