The Appeal
Visually instantly recognisable due to its popular use by copious amounts of royals and statesmen, the Daimler DS was one of the best selling in the limousine marque and for good reason. Not just because of patriotism, but the superb quality to cost ratio against others of its class, made this vehicle a hugely appealing prospect.
Famed for the ride quality, power and vast interior space, the DS420 is now widely used for funeral or wedding events and proves popular with many due to the heritage of the brand.

This splendid example boasts a very well maintained interior, nice bodywork and of course the magnificent and widely used engine which provides more than enough power and a wonderful sound.
The History and Paperwork
- 7 previous keepers registered to the current V5 document
- B4 WED registration plate included in the sale, ideal for a wedding car
- Good MOT history with only one advisory noted
- Current MOT until 6 December 2023
The Interior
Large airy interior with 4 full size seats and two smaller foldaway chairs allowing for greater passenger capacity. Nice dark, luxury feel to the interior with minor evidence of wear and tear, just the usual light leather cracking which is much less than what might be expected, evidence of notable care. The wood trim that surrounds the dashboard and adorns the doors too is in glorious condition, no evidence of lacquer cracking/peel, no notable damage or missing pieces and all presented with a high gloss.
Despite this being a 90’s vehicle, the interior carries a proper classic feel with very few ‘modern’ conveniences yet retains the period correct stereo/tape deck and speakers by Pioneer, electronically operated windows from each seat, personal lighting and ventilation, giving this vehicle everything you would need for a comfortable ride but retaining a vintage appeal.
The drivers area is remarkably well preserved, the seat, switchgear, steering wheel and dials all retain a first-rate finish with no signs of abnormal wear or use. Some stickers mark some auxiliary switches, these are seemingly from factory and are well worn but do add to the feel of the interiors well kept nature. Short of nothing more than needing a light clean, this interior is very very good and retains all the original features you would want to see and generally has not been abused in any way, an ideal way to travel!
The Exterior
This Coventry built example has a substantial and regal appearance, adorned in well applied white paint with chrome and stainless at every corner and on a whole looks every part of what a limousine should look like. The paintwork all round is very good, a nice even finish and good shine with only a handful of minor blemishes around the lower areas of the doors and sills and arches which would benefit from attention to preserve the exteriors luxurious appeal.
Evidently great care has been taken to retain a good finish to the brightwork, with all the pieces retaining their true shape and have been well fitted when the car has been painted/restored. Being a late model, this example has the more modern rubber style bumpers which are in good nick, not really showing any significant fading and only slight deforming. Original Daimler wheel caps are in place with a really good shine complimenting the exterior well.
The Mechanics
- Fabulous 4.2 straight six engine renowned for reliability and motorsport use
- All the suspension components look very good indeed, complete with a front sway bar and fully independent, individually sprung wishbones for the best ride possible
- The chassis generally is very good with need of some attention and possibly welding to two or three isolated places to retain the otherwise fine integrity of the car
- The exhaust system is in very good order finished at the back with highly polished dual exit exhaust tips
- Under the bonnet everything looks delightful, very clean and tidy, still donning the original SU carburettors.
- The underside of the engine does show evidence of a leak of some fluid
- Good tyre tread all round with quality brand tyres
Summary
Luxury motoring with a superbly maintained interior and evidence of very good care throughout the life of this fine automobile. By all means not perfect, there is some need of mechanical attention to the underside in the way of welding but with this attended to this would not only retain the otherwise very solid example but would bring this example to a very presentable example.
A hugely luxury vehicle produced for one thing - Transport in the best comfort possible. Due to the extensive use of these cars by multiple royalties and government officials, this is time to procure one of the country's most recognisable motorcars.
