Highlights
- Fantastic condition
- Looked after well as part of a small collection
- Super low miles and owners
The Appeal
Yamaha released the RD350 YPVS (Yamaha Power Valve System) in 1983, running till 1986, at the Cologne Motor Show, dubbed ‘the nearest thing to a road going racer ever produced’. With its parallel twin, two stroke engine giving around 85bhp it was well received at the time and remains in high regard to this day.
This example has two owners, with the current owner picking the bike up in 2011, it also has only 2431 miles and is in fantastic condition. The current owner is an engineer by trade and has had the bike as part of a small collection. They have taken good care of the bike whilst it has sat SORN for the last 7 years, draining the fluids to as not to cause any issues with standing fuel etc. Reinstalled to check running, the bike reportedly starts, revs, and idles well.
The History and Paperwork
- V5c present
- Invoices from 2012/2013 investigating poor running at low speed, which was found to be the wrong coil – work carried out by ‘Classic Bike Restorations’
- Various prior MOT certificates
- Service book with a typed letter from the previous owner stating the previous service as the stamp was missed
- One stamp present which was the first service log at 504 miles
- Owner’s manual is included, which also includes fold out information for the electrical system for the bike
The Exterior
- Everything on the bike is believed to be original including the paint work, which is in fantastic condition. It’s hard to see in the photos, but there is a subtle metallic flake in the black paintwork that looks to be either silver or grey
- Fairings and lights are all original and in great condition, during the photoshoot there were very few, if any stone chips or imperfections in the paint
- The wheels are much the same story with the paint work on them being in great condition. They are even wearing the original factory tyres
- As the owner reports the bike has sat for 7 years on SORN, these tyres would need to be replaced as they are starting to show cracks in the sidewalls
- All the components are mechanisms visible from the outside are all in fantastic condition, if this bike were displayed in a showroom today, it would not look out of place, a true time capsule
The Mechanics
- The owner reports the bike starts, revs and idles well and they are not aware of any faults in the mechanicals
- At the same time the coil was replaced in 2012/13 the bike also had a top end rebuild which consisted of the removal of the stator windings, rewind low and high speed ignition coils, replacement of the pulsar pickup coil, ignition coil, CDI unit, and piston rings on left cylinder as found to be lightly binding in groves, removal and strip down both carburettors
- The current owner has clearly taken great care of the bike and suggests that the bike would need a refresh after sitting for so long, changing of fluids, plugs and the like
Summary
This bike is in very good condition aesthetically and if the outside condition and reports of care are anything to go by then the internals are very likely to be in excellent condition also. Having had a recent top end engine refresh with new parts, this bike is ready to get out and tear up the tarmac once more.
