THE APPEAL

The Range Rover Classic is the original and best, so it’s no surprise to find that good ones are highly prized collectors’ cars these days.

Later examples have a different appeal, too, as they’re also the models that transformed the Range Rover’s reputation, taking it from a more car-like alternative to a Range Rover to becoming a desirable luxury object.
This example typifies that “yuppie era” Range Rover, finished in smart Caspian Blue and in Vogue spec, which means grey three-spoke alloy wheels and velour upholstery.
It was found by the vendor having been parked up for 15 years, and he has carried out comprehensive repairs to its underside as well as got the V8 powertrain up and running again.

It now needs taking to the next level – and that’s your opportunity here!

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Owners’ manual
  • Range Rover wallet
  • UK V5C
  • Radio and security codes
  • Two sets of keys
  • No MOT

Registered in the vendor’s name, the Range Rover was last MOT’d in 2007 and was with its previous keeper for 15 years, having been parked up not long after it last changed hands. He never got round to doing the work required to put it back on the road, until it was acquired by the vendor.
He has done all the hard work. He’d got it running again and has carried out substantial welding repairs to the underside. It now needs finishing.
There are two sets of keys and few original documents from when the car was new, such as the radio code and handbooks.

THE INTERIOR

  • Grey velour
  • Mostly complete
  • Excellent headlining
  • Smart fabric and minimal wear

Despite a six-figure mileage, the Range Rover still looks really smart inside with minimal wear to the seat fabrics.
It’s in mostly good order, save for a few minor faults. The wood-effect trim is coming loose from the passenger door and the glove compartment lid is missing, but it’s otherwise all straight and good, and would come up beautifully with a good clean.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Original paint
  • New upper tailgate
  • Chassis and sills welded and treated
  • Bonnet repainted

While not perfect the potential that this car has is plain to see. It’s in straight and tidy condition and the chassis is excellent, having been refurbished by the vendor who is a welder and body repairer by trade.
It’s a smart and very presentable example, the only remaining cosmetic work being a couple of small dents, a missing front spoiler, a bumper corner (already on order and will be supplied with the vehicle) and repairs to the lower tailgate panel.

The vendor has already replaced the upper one with a smart and rust-free example. There’s also some non-structural corrosion within the nearside door shut that will require work.
A couple of the door handles are also temperamental and suffer with the well-known issue of door lock pins dropping – be careful you don’t leave the keys in!

THE MECHANICS

  • 3.5-litre V8
  • Automatic transmission with high and low range
  • Starts and idles well
  • Some work required to brakes and PAS

This is the 3.5-litre version of the venerable Rover V8 engine – a well-known and proven powerplant that suits the Range Rover’s character well. It starts well and sounds great, holding good oil pressure and a steady temperature.
There are, however, a few mechanical jobs standing between the new owner and an MOT certificate.

The power steering is currently non-functional and while the brakes work they are neither tested nor proven and the car has been parked up for a very long time.
The vendor is happy to carry out the work for the next owner at cost and by separate negotiation.

SUMMARY

This is a great basis from which to make a really special Range Rover – it’s said to be structurally excellent and is cosmetically not bad at all, though you’ll need to put a bit of work in to make it perfect.
It’s all there, though, and the hardest part of the restoration work has been carried out already.

The vendor would be happy to take the restoration on for the buyer should they wish (he’s an experienced Land Rover mechanic and body repairer) and will most likely do this himself if the car doesn’t sell “as is”.
