The Appeal
Produced between 1971-89 the R107 generation of the famous Mercedes-Benz SL has to be one of the best versions. With looks to die for, and the ability to be multiple cars for the price of one, the SL should become part of your garage.
This example would have been amongst the last R107s built as the production came to an end in 1989. During the intervening 34 years it has been cherished by its previous owners and now sits in amazing condition.

The Interior

- Clean and tidy
- All headliners are in good condition
- Awesome place to sit
Opening the door of this 300SL reveals an immaculate interior that has been cared for during its 30-plus years. Finished in a subtle grey leather with dark wood veneer accents it is a very classy spec indeed. Let’s now start to have a closer look at this interior.
The largest, and possibly most important, part of any interior is of course the seats. The seats fitted to this R107 are in very good condition and are very comfortable indeed. There is some slight wear to the side bolster of the driver’s seat, but this can be expected for a car of its age. The passenger seat is in great condition, as are the two rear seats.
Matching the seats perfectly, the grey door cards are both in great condition as well with only minor marks on the pockets. Following on from the door cards the dash, also finished in grey, is presented well too with no cracking or other undue damage.
When the fabric soft-top is up its light headliner is in very good condition. This condition is mirrored by the hard top headliner too.
In the boot, you’ll find the original Mercedes jack, wheel breaker bar, and the original spare tyre. Interestingly it looks like the spare hasn’t been out of the car in its life, it still has a Mercedes information leaflet attached. This is all then hidden with the well present boot floor.
Overall, the interior of this R107 is presented very well indeed. As the current owner has only used this car for special occasions it has meant the interior hasn’t seen much use. You can now benefit from this loving care and attention.
The Exterior
- Paint in great condition
- The fabric roof is void of rips/tears
- Original hard top is still present
- Alloys in good condition
Of all of the SL generations the R107 has to be one of the better-looking variants, all of its straight lines and subtly aggressive front end makes for a great-looking car.
You mustn’t forget that you are not just buying one car here, you’re effectively getting three for the same price. As the Mercedes brochure says, it’s ‘the unique all-weather car’. This is because you get a full convertible, a soft top fabric roof, and a metal hard top that can be easily installed.

Externally, this R107 is in remarkable condition for its age. The deep black paint still retains a nice sheen and can provide a great reflection.
Both the car's roof options are in very good condition. Its black fabric roof looks to be almost new, with no signs of pulls or tears to the fabric. This condition is also mirrored by the black metal hard top. When not in use the hardtop is stored under a cover and on a proper Mercedes SL roof dolly.
One of the areas pointed out to us that shows the age of the car is a small area on the rear bumper where the silver paint is just starting to flake off.
Overall, the exterior of this Mercedes 300SL is in lovely condition. You shouldn’t have any issues with displaying this car proudly wherever you park it.
The Mechanics
- 3.0L straight-six
- Automatic gearbox
- Full-service history
The SL wasn’t only designed to look good, but it was also designed to feel sporty. Unlike earlier versions the later R107s were given more up-to-date engines and a taught chassis, this makes this late model 300SL one of the better versions to own.
Over the years this car has been mechanically looked after, and this has resulted in an SL that runs and drives very well according to the current owner. Over their 10-year ownership, it has been used for those special drives out, as a result, the car has only put on circa 4,000 miles in the past decade.
Although it may not have been used as a daily driver it has still been regularly serviced, it has recently just had a service. So, it’s ready for you to get in and go for an adventure.
On the day of the photos, the car started up nicely and drove out of the garage. It was then required to manoeuvre around the location to get the best angles, unsurprisingly it performed this task effortlessly.
Summary
If you’re after a good looking sports convertible to enjoy the summer months, then you should add this R107 to your cart. Thanks to its previous owners this car is in very good condition and is just waiting for you to get in and take it on an adventure.
