The Appeal
The 300SL has always been a popular member of the Mercedes stable. Its straight-six engine has legendary performance and reliability, runs silky smooth and sounds just right. There’s very little not to like about a 300SL.
G686 SGS was first registered in August 1989, marking it out as one of the last of the line. It’s rare to find an R107 on a ‘G’ registration plate.
This SL really does stand out amongst its peers as being especially desirable. The factory spec was very well chosen back in 1989, with the cream leather upholstery working well aesthetically with the deep red paint. It has the potential to fulfil its next owners desires whether they’re seeing it as a reliable daily driver or an appreciating collectable. There are few SL’s on the market on a G registration plate, but this ought to be very high on your wish list.

The vendor acquired the car from an elderly couple who purchased it back in 2000. The vendor is somewhat of a Mercedes specialist with several classic models in his collection.
He spent some time looking for this car as was very keen to add an unusual colour to his collection. It wasn’t just the colour that appealed however, but also the low original mileage and it being on a G registration, the very last plate of the R107 line.
The vendor is now looking to reduce his collection as other commitments means that the cars just don’t get used as much as he would like them to.
The Interior
- Beige leather seats in excellent condition
- Original Mercedes first aid kit, still in cellophane wrap
- Rear occasional seats
- Superb walnut dash
- Excellent door panels
- Pioneer Stereo
Upon opening the long doors of this SL, you are presented with the inviting prospect of sitting in the sumptuous leather seats and being transported in style and comfort. The leather upholstery is in immaculate condition, reflecting the car’s low mileage, and the quality of the owners care.
The driver is provided with a full complement of gauges on the dashboard, we particularly enjoy the analogue fuel economy gauge. And running along the centre console is a veneer of highly polished walnut, which retains a deep shine. The switches and controls all remain in good condition and the vendor reports that everything functions as it should.
To the rear, the voluminous boot is clean and tidy, with its full sized spare wheel under the floor as well as the original Mercedes first aid kit, still in its cellophane wrapper.
The Exterior
- Desirable colour combination
- Very presentable paintwork
- Original soft-top in excellent condition
Finished in a beautiful shade of deep red, this 300SL looks very smart and is ready to grace any highway with its presence.
The bodywork is all in very solid condition, with nice even panel gaps and no visible sign of corrosion. The doors and boot close with a pleasing hunk, and the bonnet is correctly aligned.
The soft-top hood is in superb condition with no holes, cracks or milkiness to the windows. The original factory hard-top is also included, this is too in very good order.
The exterior chrome work appears to be bright and the light fittings are clear. One of the alloy wheels has suffered from some blistering, but the others present well, with only minor scratches. On the whole, this is evidently a car that hasn’t suffered abuse or damage.
Overall, this is a car which wouldn’t look out of place on today’s roads.

The Mechanics
- Three-litre straight-six engine
- 188bhp when new
- 4-speed auto gearbox
- Starts easily and runs beautifully
- New Bosch battery
- Engine Bay has just been thoroughly cleaned
Under the bonnet, the smooth running six-cylinder engine fitted to this 300SL is known as a well engineered unit, which can go on to cover extremely high mileages.
As you’d expect of a car with this history and mileage, it starts and runs beautifully. Gear changes from the 4-speed auto box are smooth and quiet and the car pulls away as it should.

Summary
This Mercedes comes in an attractive colour, with complimenting cream leather upholstery. It will look good on any driveway, as a fine example of this model’s timeless appeal. This is the kind of car that matures with age, its design looking as great today as it ever did.
Its next owner will have to decide whether the car deserves to be driven, or if it should continue to be carefully stored, taking care not to increase its mileage.

Either way, this Mercedes will look good on the road wherever it goes. It is a smart and presentable example of this popular model.
