1989 Citroen 2CV6 Dolly

Highlights

  • Galvanised chassis conversion
  • Running, driving and MoT’d
  • Previous restoration, still presents wonderfully
  • Ready to use and enjoy, with numerous spares included

The Appeal

Charmingly spartan, uniquely styled and with a wonderful story, the classic 2CV has a cult following of near-biblical proportions, and offers a wonderfully classic driving experience with reliability that means they’ll just keep going, going and going…
This particular example is a late-model 1989-registered ‘Dolly’ 2CV6 special, which has been previously restored prior to the vendor’s late husband purchasing the vehicle, and as such presents in wonderful condition throughout, with extensive mechanical works ensuring its longevity for many, many years to come.

History & Paperwork

  • V5, showing 8 former keepers
  • Invoice for recent mechanical attention to an oil leak
  • MoT certificate
  • Extensive spares included
First registered in 1989, this cheerful late-model ‘Dolly’ was purchased in August 2021 by the vendor’s late husband, in a fully-restored state. Whilst the exact details of this restoration are unknown, the vendor states that the following works were said to have been carried out prior to her husband’s purchase, according to the previous advert for the vehicle:
  • Galvanised Chassis conversion
  • New left and right floor panels
  • New lower bulkhead
  • New ‘A’ panels left and right
  • New sills left and right
  • New boot floor
  • New bonnet hinge
  • Soundproofing fitted to bulkhead, dashboard and under bonnet
  • New seatbelts
  • New carpets
  • New fan belt
  • Wipers and arms replaced
  • New kingpins and bushes fitted
  • Five new wheels and tyres (all matching)
  • Full respray
  • Headlamp upgrade
  • Waxoyl chassis coating
Alongside the above, this 2CV also comes with a full seat replacement kit for the front passenger seat, as well as a new set of beige carpets.
The result of all this work is a 2CV6 which is truly ready to use and enjoy as you see fit. With its roll-back ragtop roof, delightful two-tone paint scheme and extensive mechanical and underside restoration, this is a wonderful example of the breed, and one we’re sure will prove popular when the auction goes live.

The Interior

  • Presents very well throughout
  • No reported leaks from the ragtop
  • New carpets
On the inside, the somewhat spartan - some would say utilitarian, or minimalist - cabin of this jolly little 2CV presents very well overall, and has clearly received plenty of attention during the aforementioned restoration process.
Three of the seats - the driver’s item and the rear bench seat - present in very good order, whilst the front passenger seat requires some attention, though the materials and kit for this are included in the sale of the vehicle, the invoice for which can be seen in the gallery below.
The carpets currently in the vehicle are in nearly-new condition, though if they’re not to your taste, a full set of beige carpets are included with the sale of the vehicle.
Up above, the rag top has some stains and wear visible, but no damage and there are no reported water ingress issues from the vendor, not that there are any electrical systems to worry about particularly!
In the rear, the boot presents wonderfully, and the floor looks lovely and solid throughout, with the spare wheel being present-and-correct.
Elsewhere, all four door cards are in great shape, whilst the dashboard, steering wheel and shifter also present well.
The vendor notes that whilst there are only a few systems within the vehicle, she has been unable to verify that all work correctly.

The Exterior

  • Full respray in two-tone paintwork during restoration
  • Excellent condition overall
  • Four new wheels, matching tyres
On the outside, the good news continues, as this Dolly is a true stunner in its two-tone paint job.
Overall, the condition of this 2CV is very good indeed, with no signs of any accident or impact damage, unsightly scuffs or heavy wear to the paint or bodywork that we can see.
That’s not to say it’s entirely perfect, however. There are a few marks visible up-close, including a paint run/bubble on the bonnet (above the grille) some wear around the nearside indicator housing, and some typical commensurate patina/dulling to the chrome window surrounds and trims.
We also noted that the green inset into the rear bumper is crinkling/cracking, though the chrome itself is in good order.
Up above, the retractable roof wears some stains and light patina, but nothing that looks to be any cause for concern.
Elsewhere, the badges and trims are all present-and-correct, and all of the wheels/tyres were purchased new when the restoration took place, and remain in excellent condition. All four wheels are wrapped in matching Toyo rubber.

The Mechanicals

  • 680cc air-cooled engine
  • Significant underside/chassis work during restoration works
  • Recent attention to oil leak
  • MoT until August 2023
Under the bonnet, the 680cc engine presents in good order throughout, having benefitted from light fettling during the restoration carried out by the previous owner. As far as we can see, there are no signs of any leaks or significant fluid staining in the engine bay, and no reported issues from the vendor.
Speaking of oil leaks, the history folder contains an invoice relating to a pre-MoT exam oil leak, which has been attended to and rectified.
Underneath, the chassis was replaced with a galvanised example prior to the vehicle being purchased by the vendor’s late husband, and further protected by a generous Waxoyl application, which remains in great condition.
The vendor reports that the car runs, drives, turns and stops well, with no known mechanical issues.
The most recent MoT exam - dated 06 August 2022 - shows a first-time pass at 51,106 miles with advisories for the nearside rear and offside front wheel bearings, and a slightly fluctuating offside rear service brake.

Summary

The sort of car that puts a smile on your face whenever you see it, let alone when you drive it, the 2CV has a justified enthusiast and almost cult-like following in the automotive world, thanks to its historical significance, inspired ‘cheerful’ design and stripped-back driving experience.
Previously restored to a high standard, with a current MoT certificate and no reported mechanical issues, this 1989-registered 2CV6 ‘Dolly’ is ready to use and enjoy to the fullest. One not to be missed!
