The History and Paperwork
- The car was purchased by the current owner in February 1991
- It has since been loved like a family member
- You’ll find a well-stamped book within the paperwork
- There are also a lot of previous invoices and historic paperwork
- One such piece of original paperwork is its Pre-Delivery Inspection dated 23-07-1988
- It has two original keys
- Lots of MOT certificates are present
- MOT until 7th November 2023
- There is a current V5 in the owner’s name
- In March 2019 the car experienced a small fire which was confined to under the bonnet
- After this, the engine was re-built by Crazy Quiffs and is now in great condition
- It is now your chance to experience this coach-built convertible in the summer sun
The Interior
- The interior of this Clipper has aged well
- Its houndstooth cloth seats are all in very good condition
- Across all the seats the fabric is void of any rips, tears, or big stains
- The carpets have been protected by thick rubber mats
- Spanning the length of the front is the black plastic dashboard
- This dash is very presentable and is in good condition
- Set into the dash is an original Blaupunkt Granada SQR 49 radio/cassette
- The interior is a wonderful place to sit on a drive
- With the roof up you can see that the headliner is in good condition
- On a warm day, the roof can be retracted quickly and hidden under the tonneau cover
- Once the roof is down you can enjoy the wind in your hair
- Further back in the boot, you’ll find a spare wheel and a carpeted interior
- Overall, the interior is in good condition and shouldn’t need any work
The Exterior
- Externally this Clipper is certainly eye-catching
- As should be noted VW subcontracted the assembly of all VW Mk 1 Golf convertibles to a specialist manufacturer and coachbuilder, Karmann based on Osnabruck. Thus, this vehicle has been built by hand by specialists
- The striking Paprika Red paint is complimented well by its light roof
- There is a small patch of corrosion that might need seeing to just behind the driver’s door
- According to VW specialists, this should be easily treated
- Its other body panels are in good condition with no other large areas of corrosion present
- Some of the paint on the panels is a little flat, but this may come back to a good shine after a polish
- The four alloy wheels fitted were sourced and fitted by the current owner. They are VW original, from same era, 1989, and in very good condition
- There are no areas of curb damage to those alloys
- The tyre tread is between 6 and 8mm on all four tyres.
- The external condition of the light roof is good
- The underneath seems to be in good condition as well
- Overall, the exterior of this VW Clipper is good with only a few small areas that may need attention
The Mechanics
- Thanks to regular service/maintenance this Clipper is in great mechanical condition
- Last service in November 2022, has covered less than 400 miles since
- There are lots of mechanical invoices from the previous 30-plus years
- After its small engine fire in 2019, the engine has been rebuilt.
- It was rebuilt by the VW specialists at Crazy Quiffs
- This has resulted in beautifully running engine
- On the day of the photos, it started first time and underwent a 20-minute drive
- During the drive, no worrying knocks or bangs were observed
- You should be able to have hours of fun behind the wheel of this classic
- Overall the mechanical condition of this Clipper is very good indeed
