The Appeal
The Rolls Royce Silver Spirit ushered in a new era for the marque upon first introduction in 1980. A far more modern design up to date with what the luxury vehicle market was demanding, while still sticking true to the core values which made, and still do make Rolls Royces so great. The Silver Spirit helped keep Rolls cemented as the absolute authority on luxury production vehicles and as such is a very significant automobile.
With demand for good examples soaring, Spirits such as E999 JOO present interested parties with a rare and exciting way into the model. Presenting in generally good order the car lends itself well to a sympathetic exterior restoration while still being a genuinely usable car courtesy of a wonderful 6 ¾ litre V8 and some excellent modern upgrades dotted around the vehicle.

Interior
- Highly original magnolia leather upholstery
- Dark blue hide
- Upgraded head head unit with reversing camera
- Excellent example of how good a Rolls Royce can be
Well appointed in magnolia leather with contrasting dark blue hide embellishments the cabin of the Silver Spirit is one which presents marvellously. The well crafted, spacious cabin is one of the utmost quality. Front and rear the leather seating is in near factory fresh condition, providing armchair-like levels of comfort. All of the seats are in good order with rich, quality leather, paired with great stitching and cushioning and provide very little in the way of wear and blemishing
At the sides sit four smartly upholstered door panels, mixing yet more cream leather and wood veneered trim; these are all in great shape and house some small chrome embellishments for the door pulls and electrically operated windows.
Front and centre we find yet more leather, this time in a fitting shade of dark blue matching neatly with the exterior paint scheme, this leather piece wraps neatly around the dash and centre console and is of a great standard, lacking in sun damage and discolouration. The dash panel itself, is one of a fine glossy wood finish, the assortment of gauges, switchgear and control panels embedded within mirrors of this high quality and are reported to function well.
A rather welcome addition to the Spirit comes in the form of the upgraded head unit. Turning on the ignition reveals a fold out Alpine head unit with large digital display, providing not only an upgraded sound quality and customisation but an excellent reversing camera to ease manoeuvring and boost the usability of the mighty Roller.
At the rear we find a neat and simple boot with colour matched carpeting as far as the eye can see. Here we also find the original Rolls Royce toolkit and jack.
The Exterior
- Excellent light metallic blue paintwork
- Vinyl roof
- Good chrome trim
Long flowing square lines, chrome detailing and a truly iconic front end. It could only be a Rolls Royce. The Silver Spirit is a car that thoroughly nails down the marque’s characteristic styling and as such scores high points in the aesthetics department.
As previously mentioned, investigation suggests E999 JOO rolled out of the factory in a darker shade of metallic blue, but at present sits in an arguably far more fitting lighter blue metallic. In generally great order the paint presents with a wonderful shine and helps cement the notion that this must be one of the finest colour choices for a Rolls Royce.
Whilst in good overall condition the Rolls’ body and paintwork is showing signs of age in places with some areas ideally wanting some attention and restoration. Most notably we find this around the car’s wheel arches which exhibit several areas of blemishing and damage. There is also a patch on the tailgate which for unknown reasons has played host to some duct tape which is now becoming detached from the panel.
A wonderful addition to the Spirit comes in the form of the roof. Always an excellent option for a Rolls Royce, a white vinyl roof has been installed to compliment the metallic blue paint scheme. This is of a good standard but is beginning to show signs of age in some areas.
The lashings of chrome trim placed so elegantly around the car are of a marvellous standard and flaunt a wonderful shine from all angles, this of course includes the wonderful vertically slatted chrome grille and retractable spirit of ecstasy bonnet ornament. The front and rear bumpers are of a similarly high standard and interested parties should note that to further aid with the modernisation of the Spirit, the rear bumper has been fitted with a set of parking sensors.
At ground level we find four excellent wheels fitted with factory Rolls Royce chrome wheel trims with colour matched decorative lines.
The Mechanics
- Outstanding 6 ¾ litre V8 engine
- Great overall mechanical order
- Well maintained example
The Silver Spirit presents in great mechanical order, hidden under the front hinged bonnet is a very clean example of a Rolls Royce engine that could well be described with just the word, glorious. At 6 ¾ litres the mighty V8 is certainly a powerhouse, yet one that is both refined and quiet at the same time. Wafting any passengers along in unadulterated comfort.
Firing into life near immediately at the request of the driver, the Rolls provides just a subtle engine note from its rear mounted exhaust so as not to compromise the car’s refinement. On the move the ride can only be described in one way, sublime.
Summary
One of the best ways into the world of Rolls Royce ownership, this Silver Spirit combines Rolls Royce’s timeless design, mechanics and luxury with a genuine level of usability and a smart collection of upgraded modern touches.
With a great quality interior and highly original, well maintained driveline, E999 JOO is an ideal candidate for sympathetic recommissioning but is a car that can very easily be used by its new owner in the interim.
