The Appeal
Porsche certainly knows its customers. After the Turbo introduced the purposeful wide-body ‘930’ body the firm realised there was a group of customers who wanted those aesthetics but with a less demanding engine.
Cue the Carrera Super Sport. It combined Carrera 3.2 mechanicals – which, ran the Turbo fairly close – with that distinctive Turbo wide body including the iconic whale tail. Initially accessed by ticking ‘M491’ on the lengthy Porsche options list, from 1988 this specification became a proper model, evocatively named the Super Sport. These cars got Turbo brakes as well as firmer and lower suspension. From 1987 they were equipped with the revered G50 box.
According to the owners club just 1,580 were built worldwide, available in Targa, coupe and convertible body styles.
For all these reasons the Super Sport is highly sought after by collectors. This is one of the best examples we’ve seen, tastefully combining black paintwork with a tan interior, all of which has been restored to a very high standard. A former Salon Prive Classic Supercar 2020 show winner and GT Porsche cover star, this is exquisite car looks very, very tempting.

- Shod with Continental tyres showing good condition and tread
- Tan leather interior with black piping reflecting £9,000 2018 retrim
- High specification includes Blaupunkt Symphony stereo, electric seats and mirrors
35 years on from the day this beautiful car left the showroom one would be hard pressed to identify the passing of those years. That is certainly due to the high end restoration, completed in 2019, and £9,000 retrim in 2018, but also reflects the care and attention of its owners.
Alongside the condition is the compelling specification. The car is classically finished in black with matching Fuchs alloys, all neatly contrasted by the tan leather interior. This really is a superb example of one of Porsche’s most beautiful 911 models and it is easy to see why this car has been a GT Porsche star and won prestigious show awards.
The Mechanics
- 3,164cc flat six 228bhp Porsche engine
- Desirable 5spd G50 gearbox which was only introduced from 1987
- Super Sports got lower, firmer suspension and Turbo brakes derived from the 917 racer
- We are told that the engine has no oil leaks
When Porsche switched to the 3.2litre engine, alongside more power it provided a lighter and stronger motor that is particularly appealing to classic buyers. The G50 gearbox, available from 1987, similarly improved the driving experience.
Alongside those tasty SuperSport enhancements, this 911 benefits from both of those changes. The car has clearly been cared for by its owners, which include a high end collector who supervised its restoration, and comes to the buyer in what is clearly excellent mechanical condition. A quick glance at the excellent MOT history simple verifies that point.
