1988 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6

Highlights

  • Iconic hot hatch in 1.6 litre form
  • Recent service and new clutch
  • Presented in exceptionally original order

The Appeal

The world of hot hatches was possibly no finer than in the 1980s, it was a time where nearly every automaker had something on the forecourts to attack that sector of the market. Back then, and in fact still to this day, it was the French who dominated this sector, with an unrivalled knack for building small, well handling performance pieces. Standing today as one of the most iconic, adored cars of its era, the well performing, endlessly reliable Peugeot 205 GTI was possibly the best of them all.
The demand for 1980s hot hatches is perhaps even greater than when they were new, and the Peugeot 205 is seemingly seeing the effects of this market boom more than any other rival model. High quality, unmodified 205s are becoming increasingly hard to find, with collectors snapping up good examples in an instant. In great, impressively original form, this 1988 1.6 GTI stands as a wonderful way into the world of classic hot hatch ownership and is certainly one of the better presented examples of the coveted nameplate available on the market today.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 01/08/1988

  • There are however several invoices for MOT work and general maintenance undertaken on the car throughout its lifetime
  • Invoice for recent service and restoration work performed at a cost of £1350
  • Peugeot book pack present with owners handbook and general instruction booklet
  • Current MOT valid with no advisories into October 2023
  • V5 registration document present with the vehicle

The Interior

  • Highly original interior space, impressively well preserved
  • Good quality black upholstery throughout, in truly fine form and notably limited in wear or signs of age
  • Great patterned fabric upholstery seats front and rear, in exceptionally clean form
  • There is a slight area of sagging to the drivers seat bolster however nothing we could see in the way of physical rips or tarnishing
  • Original three spoke leather GTI steering wheel, well presented with minor signs of marking around the rim
  • Black plastic dash panel in splendid order, still rich in colour and lacking in signs of sun damage or crack as is often seen on cars of this age
  • Interior trim and plastics are of a marvellous standard throughout and largely present in a like new state
  • Well upholstered door panels with contrasting red carpet lower sections and good quality black plastic door furniture
  • Upgraded period Phillips radio cassette player installed along with Pioneer rear parcel shelf speakers
  • Switchgear and interior controls are of a wonderful standard and are all reported to be working well
  • Factory sunroof is also said to be working correctly
  • Vibrant red carpeting across the entire cabin floor
  • Well sized rear boot area, in neat order

The Exterior

  • Iconic exterior styling, one of the most recognisable cars of the era
  • Finished in a quality, vibrant red paint scheme
  • In good original overall aesthetic order
  • Paintwork is of a great standard throughout, having had some minor blending work done to rectify some general age related marking and parking dents
  • Iconic pepper pot style wheels at all four corners which have been recently refurbished and fitted to new tyres
  • External trim and plastics are in fine form across the car, still with a rich black colouring to them
  • Some gentle patina in places but make no mistake this is a very presentable example of the legendary model
  • Glass work is in great order throughout

The Mechanics

  • One of the finest performing hot hatches of the era
  • 1.6 litre variant
  • In great overall mechanical order having been refurbished under current ownership
  • The car was taken for an MOT in late 2022, and the car was then sent to be recommissioned and have any reported advisories taken care of at a cost of £1350
  • Treated to a full service by the current owner
  • Vendor informs us that a new clutch has also been fitted
  • Braking system overhaul with new discs and pads throughout
  • New tyres fitted in July 2022
  • The current owner reports of an excellent driving experience from the car, thoroughly rewarding and fun
  • Underside appears clean and solid throughout, having been recently undersealed
  • Advisory free MOT for added peace of mind

Summary

Jump in, crank up the cassettes and relive the glory days of the hot hatch.
The Peugeot 205 is perhaps one of the most iconic and best performing cars of the era and has rapidly been gaining appreciation in the collector car market with good quality, unmodified examples being the go to cars, making what we have here all the more appealing. A well presented 1.6 litre 205 with a recent mechanical refresh, this vibrant red Peugeot legend is ready to find its way to a new loving home.
