1988 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC (C126)

Highlights

  • Service History
  • Good original condition
  • Rare 5.6 litre model

The Appeal

The 560 SEC is the two-door coupe version of the S class saloon, so you get all the refinements and features of the range-topping ‘S’ Class but with that wonderful pillarless coupe status and classic look.
Certainly not lacking power, with a 5.6 litre V8 under the bonnet, the SEC is a great and very usable modern classic built with all the engineering prowess that Mercedes-Benz are famous for.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in the UK in 1992 when it was re-imported to the UK
  • MOT until 16/11/2022
  • Owner’s manual
  • The current owner has had the car since 2011
  • Regularly maintained and run
  • Only covered around 3,000 miles last 11 years
  • The owner believes the mileage is genuine, but not guaranteeing as 2 MOT certificates give non sequential mileage readings.
  • Many invoices for servicing, MOTs and various repairs over the years.
  • Dinitrol underbody rust prevention certificate

The Interior

  • Full Black leather interior
  • Wood inlays
  • Great specification
The SEC 560 cabin is very well appointed as you’d expect from Mercedes and a car of this class but it needs a bit of tidying up in places as you might expect to find which is unsurprising on a car of this age.
The driver's seat shows minor colour wear in the usual area to the bolster, but the leather seems to be intact. There is some warped and lifted wood veneer on the drivers side dashboard, as per photos. Veneer is undamaged. The headlining needs some attention in some places.
Other than that, the seats are electrically adjusted, there’s an electric sunroof, air conditioning and cruise control and all in all it’s a very nice space to be and it’s as comfortable as your favourite armchair.

The Exterior

  • Great original condition
  • Pillarless profile
  • Exceptional road presence
  • One of the great ‘Grand Tourers’
The dark grey, almost black paintwork is in good all- round condition and has a nice deep shine to it, with only the areas around the front and rear bumpers and the bottom of the doors showing early signs of some corrosion. There are the usual stone chips at the front of the car and a small imperfection on the front edge of the bonnet.
All the chrome is still nice and bright, the wheels are all free from any damage or scrapes and the passenger door mirror has a small scratch.
The rear window is beginning to delaminate around the edges and the lower rubber seal on the windscreen appears a little weather worn. All in all, this big Mercedes coupe is such a handsome car with exceptional road presence it will undoubtedly attract attention wherever it goes, particularly as there are so few around these days.

The Mechanics

  • 5.6 litre V8
  • Four speed automatic gearbox
  • 380bhp
  • New tyres all round
The current owner has recently renovated some of the braking system and suspension. The car recently benefited from some servicing, replacement of some ignition parts, and a gearbox oil service.
The owner advises that the automatic electric aerial that goes up when the radio is switched on goes up fine but will not retract without manual assistance.
He says that the car drives beautifully, with seamless gear changes and huge amounts of torque and power always available.

Summary

It’s an ‘S’ Class Mercedes-Benz in charismatic coupe form with that timeless pillarless look and the ability to carry four passengers and luggage across countries in total comfort and safety, quickly.
