THE APPEAL
As beautifully built as it is to look at, the Mercedes-Benz R107 SL represents the German company’s finest hour. It harks from an era when the brand’s cars were massively over-engineered and restrained in their elegance.
R107s have survived in big numbers thanks to their inherent longevity and substantial appeal. This one is arguably the best of the bunch, as it’s the economical six-cylinder model powered by Mercedes’s indestructible M198 engine, from late on in the production run when the R107 was as good as it could get.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Owned since 1991
- Old invoices and MOTs
- Stamped service book
- UK V5C
- New MOT on sale
- Previous insurance loss
The last owner bought the SL in 1991, when it was just three years old. She had it well maintained by Mercedes dealers and specialists. It was acquired by the vendor with light accident damage and has had a new front wing, slam panel and bumpers.
THE INTERIOR
- Grey leather upholstery
- Crack-free dashboard
- Original first aid kit and tool kit
- Modern stereo upgrade
- Both roof tools present
The interior is superb, helped no doubt by the fact that the car has been garaged for most of its life.
As a result, there are none of the usual cracks on the dashboard nor any fading to the veneers or warped door cards. It’s in fine order. It’s also the 2+2 model, though the rear seat really is only suitable for the smallest of passengers.
Although it’s “only” a 300, the car was specified with leather upholstery when new. The seats are in great condition.
It has a 1990s CD-radio and all of the switchgear and controls work as they should.
THE EXTERIOR
- Nautical Blue metallic
- Soft-top in good order
- Mostly original paint
- Original alloys with good tyres
Finished in Nautical Blue metallic – one of the smartest colours for an R107, the Benz is in brilliant condition and has a rich, deep shine.
It’s in superb order overall, with no signs of any visible corrosion nor are there any dents or damage to the bodywork, just a couple of tiny scratches here and there and one piece of loose trim on the front bumper.
From what we could see, the underside of the car is also remarkably solid and in tidy order and is reported by the vendor to be ‘structurally excellent’. The soft-top roof is also in great condition and goes up and down as it should, with no signs of rust or water ingress into the rear deck panel.
THE MECHANICS
- 3.0-litre straight-six
- three-speed auto transmission
- Recent full service
- Well-maintained
It may be the baby of the R107 SL range, but the 3.0-litre six is also one of the smoothest and most reliable engines of its era, with a decent turn of power and a reputation for going on and on. The 55,000 miles covered by this one are a drop in the ocean for such a car.
This car has just had a full service by the vendor and it runs very well indeed, while the auto transmission, brakes, steering and suspension all seem to be in good health.
SUMMARY
This is a clearly pampered and well-loved R107 in great overall condition, with a genuine low mileage and a history of careful maintenance. Frugal, stylish and inarguably elegant, it’s a lovely car.
